Inspired by a centipede, because of

the segmented, modular look,

I began to permutate diff erent types of toys

with breadboards.

More iterations helped me refi ne my toy. Ithas 3 things to teach via rearranging: ABC’s,

123’s, and color order! Once connected together, it can be wheeled around!

Magnets and a molded plastic wheel with a brass axle allow for easy movability, and inlaid wood markings provide information! The modularity affords many different types of play and learning.

Swiss Design

The Kuhn Rikon by Swiss Design has a lever mechanism to grind the pepper. One hand stabilizes and the other works the lever in an 180 degree arc. James felt more comfortable using a Thumb-Two-Finger Grip, and Angela felt more comforable using a Finger-Palm-Enclosure Grip. Both used a Power Grip to steady the grinder. The ball at the end of the lever is 1.25” in diameter, which contributed to these grips. It was quite easy to manuver the lever and it did not take much force.

Fletcher’s Mills

The Pump And Grind by Fletchers’ Mills uses a pumping action activated by a thumb press to grind the pepper. This allows for one hand use. Both Angela and James used a Power Grip to hold it. Angela found it diffi cult to initiate the thumb press, and said it felt like there was a lot of friction in the mechanism to overcome in order to press it down. James didn’t have as much trouble pressing it down, due to his longer thumb length, which allows him more leverage to press down in this way.

WalMart

This Generic WalMart pepper mill uses a traditional twisting motion to grind the pepper. The diff erence in materials gives an indication of where to grab and twist the grinder. James used a Thumb-Fingertips-Enclosure Grip to twist, and a Finger-Palm-Enclosure Grip to stabilize because the fl atter sides provided a surface to hold onto. Angela felt more comfortable using a Thumb-Finger-Palmar Grip to twist, and because she has smaller hands, a Power Grip to stabilize.

The intent of this project was to createa pair of fragrance vessels that were designed from a chosen word.

My chosenword was

Flirtatious

Page 17: 2015 Portfolio - James Dalessandro

To choose my word, I explored the feeling of some words through drawings.

I chose this iteration

because it evoked the feeling of

reaching out or yearning.

I modifi ed the gestures to

create a more playful feel, where they

both envelope and reach for

eachother.
