General Philosophies

• I’m a strong proponent of the Kimball Methodology for Data Warehousing/Dimensional Modeling, and I actively promote recommend practices in building data warehouse/analytic applications– I can tie methodology to practice, and results/outcomes. So while I strongly promote architecture, I remain highly sensitive to

functionality that clients request.

– I am a firm believer in meaningful prototypes/proof-of-concept models.

– Even though the marketing of self-service BI tools favor RAD techniques, even to the point of eschewing data modeling, I still recommend that companies shape data into star-schema models, because the tools can leverage these models the best

• I have deep knowledge of Data Modeling, ETL with SSIS and T-SQL, MDX, SSAS, SSRS, PerformancePoint Services, PowerPivot, Power View, and the BI features of SharePoint.

• I help clients with tool choices, because of my approach/experience in identifying which tools will fit best

• Because of my deep knowledge of the SQL/BI tools, I can serve in a technical mentoring role and as an exemplar on using the technology to solve problems

• I stress intellectual honesty in client communications, even when the advice might seem contrary to strategic direction from Microsoft. For instance, I’ve made clients aware of the issues in SSAS Tabular

• I have extensive experience in line of business applications, having worked for many companies.

• I can work on any phase of BI/SQL Data Warehousing applications – data model design, ETL frameworks, creating OLAP applications, writing MDX code, & building reporting/client interface modules

• I worked heavily in .NET from 2002 to 2008 and was a C#/.NET MVP from 2005-2009. I still keep up with the .NET world and understand the integration points between .NET & SQL/BI applications

• Unlike some in the industry who view these as separate paradigms, I see an organic evolutionary relationship between data warehouses/data marts and BI/OLAP applications.

• An architect/writer/speaker/technical mentor, bringing great value through both depth and versatility

• I developed several custom books (nearly 100 slides/100 pages) in the areas of T-SQL programming, Data Warehousing, SSAS, SSRS, MDX, BI with SharePoint, etc.

• From 2009 -2012 I had the highest trainer rating across all company instructors

• Regularly I worked with students to prepare them for technical interviews

• I build 100+ of custom videos using Camtasia Studio to supplement courseware

• Business example of both Role-playing and M2M in SSAS OLAP

• The Fact/dimension usage becomes a level of abstraction

One single date can be used as an Invoice Date, or a Paid Date, or a PO Date in a transactional

spending table

An account might be the invoicing account or the PO account

A department might be the invoicing department or the PO department

SSAS Tabular does not support these relationships directly, and is therefore not a

level of abstraction. You must write DAX code to support.

Instructor Student feedback

• The following are a few student testimonials and evaluations

• I have more statistics and testimonials if you need more – these are a few of the highlights

• An important context here is one of outcomes – I have many testimonials where the content and training I’ve provided have led to people obtaining (and keeping) contracts and jobs

• Because of my substantial amount of industry experience (which I continued even while as an instructor), I was viewed as an exemplar on teaching technology to meet business interests.
