MLA STYLE OF WRITING
MLA: Modern Language Association
Typically used in English courses as well as Liberal Arts and
Humanities
MLA STYLE OF WRITING
Includes page numbers on each page at the top, with the author’s
last name preceding the page number
Includes a title at the beginning of the paper
Includes a “Works Cited” page at the end of the paper
Includes a heading on the first page that includes the author’s
name, class, professor’s name, and date of the paper
Includes in text citations at the end of quotes or paraphrases

APA STYLE OF WRITING
APA: American Psychological Association
Typically used in Social sciences such as Psychology, Linguistics,
Sociology, Economics, and Criminology
APA STYLE OF WRITING
Includes a title page and reference page
Includes a “running head” that incorporates the title as well as the
page number
Includes in text citations at the end of quotes or paraphrases

DIFFERENCES
APA style of writing has a title page and a reference page
MLA style of writing has a heading on the first page with the title
preceding the beginning of the paper, and a separate work’s cited page
APA style of writing has a running head that incorporates the title
preceding the page number on each page
MLA style of writing has a page number on each page with the
author’s last name preceding the page number
IMPORTANCE
Both styles of writing are important in their own ways
Many students will need to learn both styles of writing to complete
basic college courses for any degree
Knowing the differences of each style of writing is important to
be able to write a clear and effective paper with the correct citation
and format
