Third generation 1964-1971

The development of the integrated circuit was the

hallmark of the third generation of computers.

Transistors were miniaturized and placed on silicon chips,

called semiconductors

Drastically increased the speed and efficiency of

computers.

What’s new ?

Computer chips, both for CPU and memory, are composed of semiconductor materials.

Semiconductors make it possible to miniaturize electronic components, such as transistors.

Not only does miniaturization mean that the components take up less space,

it also means that they are fasterand require less energy

Instead of punched cards and printouts, usersinteracted with computers through keyboardsand monitors and interfaced with an operatingsystem

which allowed the device to run many differentapplications at one time with a central programthat monitored the memory.

First time became accessible to a mass audiencebecause they were smaller and cheaper thantheir predecessors.

In SPC we focus on removing all Assignable causes first and then make the process stable where

only common causes will be present. Then we focus on reducing variations so that we run the

process at mean/near to mean level and also with a Lean spread.

I’m interested to know the relationship between the Sigma factor and the Cpk.

My doubt is that, it shows that if we operate in +/-1sigma level we get better Cpk. But actual table

shows different.

Pl. explain based on the table below :

Mr.S Kirubakaran from TATA Motors

An excellent question and my sincere appreciations !

• Less the Sigma value is an indication of less variation – is a Good sign.

• As per the table, when the Sigma is considered to be ‘1’, the Spread will be 2 ( + or – 1 sigma ).

• Percentage yield is nothing but the coverage of the area of Spread, in the Gaussian distribution.

• The table to be understood well. 2 sigma level will cover only 68. 27 % of the total population.

• As we know a stable process ( which has NO assignable causes in it ) will be having a spread of 6 sigma,. Ie., +/- 3 sigma.

• That 6 sigma itself will not cover the total population ( ie. 100 % of the population). It covers 97.97 % of the total population. That is the significance of the Yield mentioned in the table.

• When the 2 sigma spread itself is falling in the SPECIFICATION limits, the estimated Cpk would be 0.33.

• It is an indication of large variations and wide spread process.

• Obviously, it cant not be a good process at all !

Answer to the Query on SPC by Mr. S Kirubakaran of TATA Motors

Share &Care -Sept 2012

• I have noticed in some places, the Customer will demand the Supplier to Operate in the +/- 1 Sigma level itself.

• It is impossible to operate and if the Producer attempts to do so, it is called as Over-adjustment ! ( TPM calls this as ‘Tinkering of the Process’ ). This has to be Strictly avoided and the process to be allowed to have its own Bell shaped curve.

• That way, the Table to be understood and process to be allowed to run.

• Your views on Chance causes & Assignable causes are perfect.

• Disappointing to note, that some of the Engineers & Managers are just satisfying by feeding in the data in the Mini tab – even without knowing the basics.

• That way, your question carries lot of value in it.

• Appreciations for the excellent question, once again !
