OVERVIEW of sub-SAHARAN AFRICAPOWER SECTOR
Today only 10 % of Africans have access to electricity
Uneven distribution of electricity with concentration in a few countries
Lowest annual per capita consumption in the world
Thermal production gives a non acceptable price for majority of population

OVERVIEW of SSA POWER SECTOR
Assumptions There is a strong correlation between energy
consumption and economic growth
Access to modern energy services directly contributes to economic growth and poverty reduction
Electricity is essential for the provision of basic social services and also for powering machines that support income generating activities which tend to reduce poverty (MDG)

HYDROPOWER IN SSA Total installed capacity in Africa is about 20.3GW /
generation 76 000 GWh / year
Gross theoretical hydropower potential of about
4 000 000 GWh/ Year
Energy derived from moving water is environmentally benign as compared to that obtained from burning fossil fuels – Emission of greenhouse gases

8POWA presentation
SMALL HYDRO POWER(SHP) Electricity generation through SHP is gaining owing
to: Short gestation period
Low investment, low ongoing operational and maintenance costs
Low environmental impact
SHP represents in SSA the highest density of resources
SHP plays a dominant role in rural renewable energy markets
SSA has one of the lowest SHP installed capacities despite the enormous potential

POWA CONCEPT Develop SHP in SSA – Size between 1 to 20 MW
Secures investments by spread off the risks on several countries (some MIGA insurance)
To provide a full package including financing, studies, construction and operation in BOT (CC and PPA for 30 years)
Sale of the energy to the local electricity company or if necessary assume the distribution in the area of construction
