Keep talking: More than 7,000 exhibitors puttheir faith in the communicative power of the Erfurt trade shows.

Staging trade fairs

Shaping the location

We see ourselves as a location with a roleas a driving force: There are a number ofsignificant socio-political issues that gointo the trade fairs we put on – opportuni-ties for central and eastern Germany, creating networks within the commercialworld, generating marketing for the re-gion. As a result, Erfurt becomes a beacon.

Targeting the future:While newcomersand experts convene at the Rapid.Tech con -ference and trade fair to discuss the latesttrends in generative manufacturing tech-nology, the most recent technology high-light in the calendar, FabCon3.D, aims toappeal to the growing community of fansof 3D printing. Messe Erfurt is the onlyvenue that illustrates the industrial andprivate applications of this technology.

Putting policy into practice:Eventssuch as Wind.Energy – a Conference for Central Germany, Thuringia Investors’ Dayand the Thuringia Real Estate Conferenceare aimed at consolid ating networks within the local economy and marketingThuringia as a business location.

Focussing on the consumer:The consumer fairs are a major attraction forthousands of visitors from all over centralGermany. It’s only natural. The Congress Center and all the hallshave been designed to be multi-funct -ional with an emphasis on ecology andeconomy. Messe Erfurt makes every ef-fort to ensure that all aspects of the tradefair business are made to be sustainable –from organisation, booth construction, and hosting supporting events, to show-related traffic and energy consumption. Our long-standing involvement in regional environmental projects and the planned international Green Globecertification scheme brings the assurancethat resource efficiency is a key factor inthe hosting of trade fairs, conferences, concerts and events – not least as all electricity used is 100% green energy.

Bees on the roof. Ecology in practice: With the support ofthe Thuringia Beekeepers’ Associationwe have five colonies of bees in hives onthe roof of Messe Erfurt. Erfurt

A city at the centre of things

Erfurt is the capital of the Free State ofThuringia. Thuringia’s state assembly andgovernment and the Federal Labour Courtare located here and play an importantpart in highlighting Erfurt’s character asan urban centre. Now, at the beginning ofthe third millennium, the city is also be-nefiting from its geographical position inthe centre of Germany and of a unitedEurope, particularly where advantages of infrastructure are concerned. Majorpan-European routes for all forms oftransport meet here at the intersection of East-West and North-South axes. As acommercial location it is characterised byits wide diversity of industries, which canbe grouped into five main areas of compe-tence: mechanical and plant engineering, the media and creative industries, horti-

culture and food products, microsystemstechnology and optoelectronics, and logistics. Approximately 13,000 firms are based in Erfurt, proving the city’s credentials as an attractive business loc at -ion. Erfurt boasts one of the best-preser-ved medieval city centres anywhere inGermany, with its landmark pairing of StMary’s Cathedral and St Severus’ Church.

More dynamic than BerlinIn a survey conducted by the InitiativeNeue Soziale Marktwirtschaft (INSM, aGerman think tank), which ranked Germ -any’s 50 most populous cities according to their dynamism as reflected by develop-ment during the period 2006–2011, Erfurtcame in 6th place with 55.6 points, wellahead of Berlin and Hamburg.
