DESCRIPTION

Today, we have a bunch of interfaces on production devices There is no interoperability with IT based post units Common equipment connection technology is restricted to 3Gbit/s, but 10Gbit/s or even more already required We demonstrate a validated future strategic interface technology for power sensitive applications and long distances IP-Racine is sponsored by the European Commission 6th Framework Programme. see www.ipracine.org for details.

Today: HD-SDI

q Current HD-SDI acquisition infrastructure is restricted§ only AV streaming§ reduced capabilities for metadata§ no control (stream/device), no file system access

§ bunch of additional interfaces needed (RS422/232, Ethernet, Genlock,..) § no interoperability with IT based applications in the flow/post

q The bandwidth issue:§ limited to: 1080p, 2k with 30fps

§ 1,5Gbit/s single link, 3GBit/s dual link, 3G-SDI

Page 6: iDiff 2008 conference #01 IP-Racine : Cinema production infrastructure on 10G Ethernet

Thomas BRUNE 30.01.20086

Today’s ‘wish list’

q A unified DC production infrastructure§ consolidating AV-content, metadata and device control§ 4k (8k) resolution, 3D, SloMo, ‘fast downloads’ (all uncompressed!)§ close gap between DC acquisition and post pro (IT components)§ (no isle solution only for DC …)§ easy to handle, ‘just plug the cables and select the AV-formats …’

q Spoken in ‘technical terms’:§ interface with real-time behavior and flexible protocols § ~10Gbit/s bandwidth required by today

- and even more à roadmap§ common interface technology for AV devices and computers§ (one solution for DC, HD production, …)

Page 7: iDiff 2008 conference #01 IP-Racine : Cinema production infrastructure on 10G Ethernet

Thomas BRUNE 30.01.20087

What solution is the best?

q 3G-SDI§ only AV, reduced meta, no control§ no roadmap§ is dual-, quad-link really the solution in terms of more bandwidth?

q Current isle implementations§ 4 times HD-SDI multiplex over 10G fiber

- only AV, reduced meta, no control

§ 10G InfiniBand- flexible protocols- existing roadmap- niche product for compute clusters, no native support for distances beyond 15 meters

q 10G Ethernet§ flexible protocols§ lots of AV transmissions already done over Ethernet (but, mostly by over-provisioning)§ broad acceptance in IT industries + existing roadmap

Paradigm change

The Pro&Cons of packet oriented interfaces (Ethernet)replacing streaming interfaces (HD-SDI)

q Pro§ versatile usage of packets§ flexible routing due to separate streams and virtual connections§ transmission of only the active video saves bandwidth

q Cons§ new sync and clock transmission scheme has to be established

Page 13: iDiff 2008 conference #01 IP-Racine : Cinema production infrastructure on 10G Ethernet

Thomas BRUNE 30.01.200813

Real-time AV over 10G Ethernet means …

q Local area network (LAN) with qualified devices§ to have full control over devices and network§ quality of service for bandwidth allocation and guarantee§ no packet re-ordering, no packet loss§ maximum latency in the range of few video lines

q Standard IP and Ethernet protocols§ slim implementation to avoid traffic overhead§ compatible with PCs/workstations (post pro)§ appropriate AV layers on top, to provide DPX, AIFF, Metadata, …

q New synchronization scheme§ to avoid the extra Genlock line

Page 14: iDiff 2008 conference #01 IP-Racine : Cinema production infrastructure on 10G Ethernet

Thomas BRUNE 30.01.200814

Others started AV & sync over Ethernet as well …

q SMPTE/EBU just started a new sync/timing standardization approach targeting also packet interfaces

q IEEE1588 – distributed clocks over IP networks

q IEEE802.1 AVB – Ethernet with Audio-Video bridging
