Friends United MeetingSummer Mission Project 2010
Water for Life
The Challenge – Enough Clean WaterWater-related diseases are a
growing human tragedy, killing more than 5 million people each year - 10 times the number of people killed in wars. About 2.3 billion people suffer from diseases linked to dirty water. Some 60% of all infant mortality worldwide is linked to infectious and parasitic diseases, most of them water-related.
Four categories of water diseases1.Water-borneCaused by water
contaminated by human, animal, or chemical waste
2. Water-based Caused by aquatic
organisms (flukes, tapeworms, roundworms, etc.)
3.Water-related vectors Transmitted by mosquitoes and tsetse flies
4. Water-scarce diseases Where fresh water is scarce and sanitation is poor
In the African countries, it is usually the women and children who fetch the water from the river, often several miles away.
These children have just returned from getting their jugs of water from the river, over a mile away. Oops! Spilled some!
In order to improve the quality of life for African communities….Friends United Meeting invited contributions of funds for:
•Water filters•Rain storage tanks•Well drilling
BIO-SAND WATER FILTERSMade of concreteContains a metal
plateThree layers of
gravel and sandDirty water in the
top and clean water comes out the spout
Here is what they look like
We can do it two ways: give the filter or give the means to make the filters.
This filter is being used at Kaimosi hospital.
These filters are being made to sell in a micro business.
Thanks to High Point Friends in North Carolina, filters are now being used in many places. There’s always a need for more.
Here is one at a school in the Turkana desert.
This one is the home of FTC Principal, Ann Riggs.
From dirty water to clean in minutes! Yes, it’s been tested many times!
How much does it cost?$50 will buy a
water filter that will provide clean water for a family.
$3500 will set up a micro-business and includes a steel mold, materials and training. One mold can produce 15 to 20 filters in a month.
Rain Collection Tanks provide an easy water source.
So, from $300 up, depending on the size, a tanks can be installed.
Wells are a luxury for people in rural areas. This one serves the Chwele Girls School.
Drilling a bore hole (well) is very expensive, but builds community among the desert folk. This one is in Lokoyo, Turkana. In February 2011, another one was contracted, thanks to this water project. We expect it to cost $20,000.
Now there’s a well in Katapakori!Water splashed in his eyes!
John Moru tests the water.
Everyone wants to try the new water!
This will be a source of life!
“…whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the
water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to
eternal life.” John 4:14
