The 2013 Scion iQ ranks 37 out of 40 Affordable Small Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of published reviews and test drives of the Scion iQ, as well as reliability and safety data.

The 2013 Scion iQ is slow and small. Most critics agree that it only makes sense for committed urbanites.

With a 94-horsepower, four-cylinder engine, some test drivers say the 2013 Scion iQ has poor acceleration. Still, test drivers aren’t surprised, considering the iQ is a very small car. The iQ comes with a continuously variable transmission that receives mixed reviews. Some reviewers think it boosts acceleration, while others dislike the CVT because it makes the iQ’s performance boring. With the CVT, the iQ gets an EPA-estimated 36/37 mpg city/highway, which is high for the class, but is rather low for a car as small as the iQ. Although it’s slow, the Scion iQ impresses auto writers with its sharp steering and ability to squeeze into any parking space. Some reviewers, however, say the iQ has a bumpy ride and is easily buffeted by crosswinds.

Test drivers aren’t surprised that the interior of the Scion iQ has some hard plastics. They are impressed, though, that the iQ has a lot of standard interior features that are easy-to-use. Each iQ comes with a USB port, Bluetooth and a Pioneer stereo. A Pioneer premium audio system is optional, but one critic isn’t impressed with either stereo’s sound quality. A navigation unit and satellite radio are also optional. In addition to these standard tech features, all iQ models have 11 standard airbags, which is impressive for the class. However, the iQ’s safety score is still below average compared with other affordable small cars. Though the four-seat Scion iQ is one of the smallest cars available, reviewers say the front seats have plenty of legroom. The rear seats and cargo area, however, are very tiny. Test drivers say the rear row is hard to access and barely has any legroom.
