Now to N your time more gang thou same chan the cont vide This is one of the early music videos that fall under the relevant (to me) to the hip hop that I am looking at. Made in 1979, rappers delight is one of the ‘OS’s’ of hip hop culture as we know it today. In this music video, we can see people in very vibrant colours, with very ‘liquid’ like dance moves, truly moving to the beat. There are a lot of people dancing and watching the people grooving to the beat, this could suggest that this type of music would bring people together? The setting that they are in is in a game show like place. This is by the time that game shows were really kicking off in television. This is perhaps following the times and phases of that era. This is an organised dance routine (because they are all perfectly positioned) so we can tell that the early hip hop genre is music to make you dance and something that I could use in my video. From this shot, it looks like a run way which is normally associated with fashion. And in the late 70’s is when the world really stared to get in to fashion and the fashion business really started to from the world on what we wear due to easy access to the media growing. So once again they are keeping with the times.

Now skip forward 9 years to NWA’s ‘express yourself’, this is by the time where hip-hop was more affiliated with gangster rapping, so even though the beat is the same, the times has change dramatically, so the conventions of the content that the music video has is different, in the fact that its more about dark colours and more looking at the more illegal part of the law (drugs, crime ect), so they have included this in the video because some of the video is filmed in a jail (this is

Another piece of mies en scene is that they are all wearing expensive looking jewellery. This is also a piece of items that gangsters in the 1980’s were typically represented of wearing.

I have also noticed that in the newer age of hip hop, they also include weird shots of images in as well. So I am also going to have to use that in my video.

Now we will look at one of the newest forms of hip hop (which is the one that I will mainly be looking at so for my music video) which is uk hip hop.

It starts off with a shot of the performer walking in an urban environment (which has a strong correlation with the 80’s form of hip hop) this obeys Goodwin’s theory by saying that there is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals of the video . After this, it has more shots of him just walking (which is the name of the song) through the streets, however each shot averages for about 4-6 seconds in length. He also waves to people in the streets, maybe meaning that he is big in that town because he is famous.

The shots that are used in this video, typically have a fish lens on it, and are all different shots, this is a good technique to use due to the audience bot getting bored of seeing the same P.O.V every time.

As mise en scene, they are using loads of every day props, for example in this shot they are using a shopping trolley as he is just roaming the shops, which is a very average and normal thing for a person to be doing, so they are still representing the everyday person in this video.

This is a very good shot/ method that I can use in my video, because this is a good example of match on action, when he throws his jumper on the camera, he takes it off and is in a different outfit and starts to rap to the song, which is very entertaining to watch.

As we can see here, the main performer has his mates or fans with him. This is a common thing to happen in a hip hop music video, with the mates in the background following him and supporting him. This is an element that I can add to my video and would fit in very nicely.

It ends with a broken effect, the reason for thgis is because it has a smashing glass sound FX. Also it may be representing how the audience feel after listening to this, so it has a physical and also symbolic meaning behind it as well.

One of the main elements that doesn’t follow Goodwin’s theory is that There isn’t a frequent reference to notion of looking and particular voyeuristic of the female body. in the video that I’m doing there isn’t any women in the video.

Goodwin also states that the star image is the most vital part of the music video. The artists want to keep an individual and unique image to stay current and for the audiences to remember them (Lady GaGa). This plays a big role in the production process of the music video. So this is an element that I want to add to my music video, and to match the genre of the video. So I will be doing this by making my actor wear loads of different urban clothing however, I will get him to keep one piece of clothing on (maybe the same hat) so that could be his iconic piece of clothing so the audience can relate to him in that way. This would also be obeying Goodwin’s theory that the demands of the record label will need a lot of close ups and something that copies the motif of the artists that recue across their work.

Technical aspects hold the music video together through the use of camera work, movement of the camera (panning, follow shot), angle of the camera (P.O.V shot, low shot, close up), mise-en-scene, editing of the clips together, sound and any special effects used. The speed, camera movement, editing and post production are all different forms of use of camera. Lighting and colour help set moods and give emphasis to key movements of the song to give a more dramatic effect to keep the audience entertained. Mise-en-scene and the setting of music videos is vital as it all needs to look authentic to keep the professionalism. Music videos use cuts to go with the beat or rhythm making the video more entertaining for the audience to watch, boosting their chances of wanting to listen/ watch it again. So for my music video I will be using fast paced clips and also have a big range of camera angle and methods to help me tell my story which relates to the meaning behind the song.

Narrative and performance are two parts work hand in hand to make a more enjoyable music video. The narrative is the story that the video has and the performance is a live performance from the artist to interest the audience. Goodwin believes that miming the words to the song is still the most popular thing done in music videos today, but the artist’s best interest to make it look as real as possible to the audience to make it more enjoyable to watch, and also when the artist is singing the words they act it out as well. This can be called coherent repeatability, this means that it makes it easier for the audience to watch it over and over again due to it being more entertaining. So for my video I will mainly be doing performance, due to the fact that in all the uk hip hop videos ive seen, they have all mainly had preforming in it however they have also had a slight connection with narrative, in the fact that they will go through the whole day, from morning to night, so even though it isnt telling a whole meaningful story, it is taking the audience through their day, so to an extent, it is a slight narrative video because of that reason.
