Bill Wadman's work tends towards traditional portraiture in both environmental and studio settings. He shoots in all formats and in both film and digital. 'Motion' is a series of long exposure studies of human motion shot in the studio. Often featuring dancers, the images give an eerie and alien atmosphere and depict something unnatural to the eye.

To set up the image I used a black backdrop in a room with all the blinds put down and any other sources of light covered to get it as dark as possible. I used a long exposure time as well as a high ISO (higher on one of the images) so that the movements made by the model would all be taken in without the image being too bright or too dark.

ISO : 800 Exposure time : 25 seconds

ISO : 400 Exposure time : 25 seconds

To produce this image I simply laid one on top of the other and used the "Soft Light" blending mode and used 50% opacity. Layering the images caused a lot of the movement blur to cancel out in certain areas and in other areas stack up and create a more bold effect.
