Sébastien LoebON TOP OF THE WORLD!After months of anticipation, Sébastien Loebhas shattered the Pikes Peak International HillClimb record with a breath-taking time of8m13.878s in the 208 T16 Pikes Peak. TheFrenchman negotiated the 20 kilometres and156 corners of the mountain at an averagespeed of 145kph.

Loeb's time blitzed the previous best of9m46.164s, set by Rhys Millen last year, "Forme, this was the race of the year," said Loebat the finish, 4300 metres high in the RockyMountains. "At the beginning of my run therewas a bit of pressure for sure because I knewthere was so much work and investment fromPeugeot and all the partners. Now, after all thepractice, it was just down to me and I had toperform."

There were a number of delays before hestarted, which meant that the team began toworry about bad weather: a common featureof Pikes Peak at high altitude. "When I was onthe start line waiting to go, I could actually seethe clouds closing in at the top of themountain," said Loeb. "I remember thinkingthat if we didn't get going soon, it would bereally difficult."

As it was, Loeb blasted his 208 T16 Pikes Peak through the clouds in a time that was even quicker than PeugeotSport's computer had thought was possible. The ideal theoretical time – calculated using data from Loeb'spractice runs up the Colorado mountain – was 8m15s. The nine-time world rally champion somehow managedto shave two seconds off that.

Sébastien Loeb has broken every record there is to break in the World Rally Championship but he is not quitedone with firsts yet. We caught up with the man who has not just blitzed the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb:instead comprehensively pulverized it with a blue and white sledgehammer built by Peugeot Sport…

Sébastien, what did it feel like to drive the 208 T16 Pikes Peak?

SL: "It's definitely a very special feeling and a big moment. You have the downforce of a Le Mans car, withacceleration that is faster than a Formula One car, going through scenery that is a bit like rallying. It just comesout of corners like a cannonball; the traction is astounding. With steep drops either side, and somuch work and investment going into this programme, you obviously can't make anymistakes... It's 20 kilometres of taking risks. There was a certain amount ofpressure that I felt before the start, that's true."

How do you find the right balance between being quick enough to win but safeenough not go off?

SL: "Good question... In fact, before starting, I spent a lot of time thinking aboutwhether or not to push to the maximum to get a really good record or whether or notjust to push hard enough to get a result so that we could win. In the end, onceI was in the car, I decided to push hard. I'd say I was pretty much onthe limit of it with every corner. But it was OK, we didn't have anymoments at all."

How does this win rank among all your other achievements?

SL: "Well, I'm not going to say it's like winning a rally title but it still means a lot. I always looked atPikes Peak in the past and thought that it would be nice to do it one day, and now here I am. For me, withwhat I'm doing this season, it's the race of the year. Of all the cars I've driven this year, the 208 T16Pikes Peak is definitely the most fun. This one is a good record, which I think will be quite hard to beat."

Back in the eighties and early nineties,the 205 Gti had built a reputation ofarguably being the best ‘Hot Hatch’ onthe market but……

Hidden in the corner of any Peugeotshowroom was it’s ugly sister the 309Gti. In the early days there were not toomany offers to take it to the ball butdespite its reputation as the frumpierone, the 309Gti was a fantastic car inits own right; perhaps even a better one?

The Peugeot 309 was originallyintended to be badged as a TalbotArizona, the replacement for the agingTalbot Horizon. At the same time adecision was being made by the PSAGroup to discontinue the Talbot brandand the Arizona soon became thePeugeot 309.

The 309 also became the first Peugeotcar to be assembled in the UK at theformer Rootes factory in Ryton-on-Dunsmore, which Peugeot hadinherited from Chrysler in 1978 and themodel soon became a popular choiceparticularly in the United Kingdom.

The Peugeot 309 GTI was introducedin 1987 and shared the same 1905cc(128bhp) Engine as the 205 GTI 1.9.

The car had an impressive look thatincluded a large black boot spoiler,front airdam, Speedline alloy wheels,driving lights integrated into The frontbumper and tinted glass.

Whilst the 205 GTi was the car everyone wanted, the 309 GTi was gaining a reputation as oneof the best ‘Hot Hatches’ on the road. The performance of the engine was complimented byexcellent handling, mainly thanks to the weight distribution between the front and the rear axelsplus a great suspension set up. Enthusiasts today still believe that the 309 GTi is one of the bestfront wheel drive cars ever made.

Despite having the image (in some quarters) of being ugly, the car was loved by the motoringpress with Autocar and Motor Magazine voting the Peugeot 309 GTi as "Best Hot Hatch" for 3years in a row, beating off the 205 and Golf Gti’s!

Max Power Magazine said of the car; "The 309 GTi handles similarly to the 205 GTi but muchbetter, whilst Performance Car magazine had this to say about it; “At heart the 309 is a veryordinary family five-door car what transforms into a lovable GTi. The Peugeot 309 is in a classof its own. It oozes driver appeal from every pore. From the fine seats to the superlative steeringit really does deliver the goods.”

The 309 was eventually replaced in 1993 with the 306 and that’s another story…..

At the Goodwood "Festival of Speed", Peugeot unveiledthe RCZ R, a more powerful version of its sports coupé,symbolic of the marque's expertise in design anddriving sensations.

Its new 270 hp engine with a capacity of 1.6 l and CO2emissions limited to just 145g/km place the RCZ R atan unheard-of level of performance and efficiency.

CELEBRATING OUR 40th ANNIVERSARY

24th July 2013

Our 40th anniversary evening was an excellent evening withover 160 customers old and new joining us for a celebrationevening. It was also good to catch up with some old membersof staff that we had not seen for a while and it was great toshare some happy memories.

Both the stunning new Peugeot 208 Gti and 2008 Crossoverwere on display and proved to be a big hit with guests althoughunfortunately, no one won the GTi in our roll a dice competition!

The evening was a great success as were the following 2 daysthat saw many more customers’ visits to view the new carsand take part in our competitions.
