Striped icebergs from Antartica

Icebergs from Antarctica

Icebergs in the Antarctic area sometimes have stripes, formed by layers of snow that react to different conditions.

Blue stripes are often created when sea water freezes so quickly in a crevice in the ice sheet that no bubbles form.

A green stripe forms when an iceberg falls into algae-rich sea and a layer of water freezes to the underside.

Brown, black and yellow lines are caused by sediment, picked up when the ice sheet grinds downhill towards the sea.

The water freezes in mid-air as the wave breaks through the ice.
