The Sculpture “Perm’s man – salty

ears”This memorial, according to the magazine “The Russian World”, is the strangest memorial of Russia. It is devoted to the saying that sounds likewise. There are several versions of its origins. The most common is the following.

ears”In the 15th century salt was a very expensive product. Perm was one of the biggest “salt makers”. Special loaders brought big sacks with salt to barges. These sacks were brought on man’s head. Salt poured out and corroded loader’s ears, they got red. When such a loader came to the tavern people said:“Perm’s man salty ears has came!”

This sculpture, invented and realized in bronze by Rustam Ismagilov has become the real place of interest. And nowadays it can be seen in different world-known photo-albums.

The Savior’s Transfiguration Cathedral – Perm State Art Gallery – The

Cathedral SquareNot so long ago, Perm has returned The Cathedral Square. Firstly, its name was restored, and in 2009 it was reconstructed. This square contains practically every important feature of Perm. A magnificent sight on the river Kama, Komsomolskiy prospect leading to the centre of the city. Here the monument to Saint Nikolay is situated. The Cathedral Square is the cultural heart of Perm.

The Square is surrounded by 2 buildings. The first one, built in 1831, used to be an ecclesiastical seminary. Many talented people graduated It. Among them are the inventor of radio Alexander Popov, writers Pavel Bajov, Michail Osorgin, Dmitry Mamin-Siviryak. During the time of Soviet Union a school of war engineers worked here. One of the most famous graduates was Aleksandr Pokryshkin, who was awarded as a Hero of Soviet Union 3 times. He shot 59 airplanes of the enemy. In 1962 the building was given to High Perm War College of Rocker Forces, devoted to marshal Chuikov. It was closed in 2003.

Cathedral Square

On the opposite side of the Square The Savior’s Transfiguration Cathedral stretches its bell tower to the sky. It is supposed, that cathedral was built by the project of famous M. Kazakov, who built the Peter’s palace in Moscow. The height of the bell tower was 67 meters at first. But during the Civil war the top of the building has been destroyed. After that it hasn’t been reconstructed.

Cathedral SquareNowadays the famous Perm Art Gallery is situated in the Cathedral. It contains a very big collection of Russian and foreign sculptures and paintings. And the greatest exhibition of the Gallery is devoted to Perm Wooden Sculpture.

The Railway Station Perm I

In 1878 the quay of Kama was beautified by the building of railway station (the project by Bihovc). The ceremonial opening of Ural Mining Railway took place on the 1st of October 1978. It lead from Perm to Yekaterinburg. Nowadays the building of railway station is protected as a historical memorial.

The public Garden with a steam engine locomotive

This locomotive nowadays looks like an ancient fossil. Though this kind of locomotives was built in Soviet Union in 1935-1957. Today it stands near the Railway station Perm I and beautifies the complex.

Meshkov’s House – Perm’s Regional Museum

Nicolay Meshkov bought the ruins of this house in 1885 (it was burnt in 1842). The house was rebuilt by a young architect Turchevich in a modern style. Soon it became the face of the city for people who travel along the river on steamboats.In 2008 the house was given to Perm’s Regional Museum.

MeshkovMeshkov is the

greatest Perm’s sponsor. That was he, who developed the idea of opening the university in Perm. He was an intelligent man and many famous people used to visit him: Kuprin, Peshkov, Gorky etc.

Meshkov lived on the first floor of the house, and the second one was used by Perm steamship line.

Theatrical GardenTheatrical garden is one of the most attractive places of Perm.Nowadays it is a quiet park where you can see mothers with babies, old people feeding pigeons and lovers. But this place hasn’t always been idealistic.

In 1802 the shopping arcade was built here and the hubbub was heard from early morning till late night. In 1929 old building where destroyed, and a garden called “Komsomolsky” was planted. Nevertheless for most of Perm people the garden has always been Theatrical as it leads to the Opera House.

8 years later The Opera House was built on this place. Money for its building was taken from donations of Perm citizens.

The first opera played in 1870 in a small wooden building near the shopping arcade was “Life for the tsar” written by M. Glinka.

Theatrical troupes from Perm have been awarded by “Golden mask” several times.

Academic Opera and Ballet Theater is one of the best music theatres in the country.

The Sculpture “Perm The Sculpture “Perm Bear”Bear”

In the center of the city a bear is walking somewhere. This is not a tale – a bronze sculpture projected by Pavlenko and Krasnosheina nowadays beautifies city’s centre. Perm has a bear on its coat of arms. Our bear is good-natured and quiet. There is a belief that a wish of a man who rubbed the bear’s nose will soon come true.
