•  In June 2010, Heritage Hotels teamed up with MEAK (Medical and Educational Aid to Kenya) team in Masai Mara. The medical team consisted of doctors from Kwale District Eye Centre near Mombasa, MEAK and Lions SightFirst Eye Hospital.

•  Due to cultural norms, the Masai are often afflicted by what are containable eye infections, but which can lead to blindness if untreated.

•  293 patients were investigated with 111 operated for cataracts and 25 for tarsal plate rotations.

•  Many more were treated for conjunctival infections and allergies, with more than 300 bottles of eye drops and 11 pairs of reading glasses prescribed.

•  The team also operated on two children, one nine year old with cataracts to both eyes and one seven year old with a cataract in her right eye, with both getting their sight restored.

•  Pre-screening was organized at various centres and manyattas (homesteads) in the communities surrounding the reserve.

•  Heritage Hotels provided food, accommodation and transport for the patients and the manager’s house as a temporary clinic.

Community Social Responsibility – Paediatric Heart Mission in Mombasa

"   While the eye mission was underway in the Mara, MEAK and volunteer doctors from Guy and St. Thomas Hospital in London were conducting paediatric open heart surgeries at the Mombasa Hospital.

"   This was the first time that open heart surgery was performed at The Mombasa Hospital.

"   They operated sixteen needy children aged between 2 months and 13 years at the Mombasa Hospital.

"   It is estimated that MEAK now carries out 35% of all paediatric cardiac surgery on a welfare basis, in Kenya

"   Heritage Hotels through Voyager Beach Resort hosted the entire team of 16 doctors and nurses free of charge for the duration of the mission.

Community Social Responsibility – Arsenal in Naivasha

•  Arsenal Football Club has community coaching links with many countries across the globe - from South Africa to Thailand and we at Heritage Hotels are proud to work with the Arsenal team from the UK on its first community coaching programme in Kenya.
