SCHOOL POLICY

Reward and praise as much as possible

If you have lots of pupils misbehaving, acknowledge the ones who are following instructions

Take action later with a few. Pick them off gradually, one at a time if necessary. It may be a long term battle. YOU WILL WIN!

REWARD & PRAISE

PRETEND YOU LIKE THEM

BE THE EMBODIMENT OF VIRTUE, CALM & PATIENCE

FORGIVE & FORGET

BE A SAINT

Use pupil planners Make phone calls

Also inform them if there has been an improvement or just if you’re pleased

contact parents

Involve other colleagues (use buddy system, HOY, on-call system)

Share concerns

It’s not you!

DON’T BE A LONE RANGER

Moderate your language;Don’t shout;Plan for losing your temper.

Elevate your language – adopt old-fashioned teacher speak

Use ‘teacher scripts’

Role play & practise with a friend

MIND YOUR LANGUAGE

Plan ahead. Plan for misbehaviour.Have a contingency (Plan B).

Plan B

Use do statements, not don’ts

Cultivate a positive ethos

Expect compliance

Say: ‘thank you’ rather than please

Be a Do’ nut

I NEED YOU TO SIT DOWN … THANK YOU

Broken Record technique (endless repetition)

Give choices not threats –do this now or get a phone call home – IT’S YOUR CHOICEMove seats now or get a detention – YOUR CHOICE

CHOICE

Get involved in extra curricular activitiesLet them see you in other contexts

GO APE!

Play the part. Sound the part.See yourself through their eyes.

LOOK THE PART

Don’t confront. Defuse and defer.Deal with individuals in private, after the lesson.

NO PUBLIC ROWS

Don’t send pupils out – use on-call, buddy system

DON’T CREATE CELEBRITIES

Have a toolkit of extra resources

If you are a cover teacher, ensure work is sufficient and of good quality. If not, tell the teacher/Head of Department
