Surface currents and prevailing winds in the Atlantic Ocean. Winds are depicted by arrows. In the left figure The Gulf Stream can be seen going from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada and Greenland. On the right figure colors represent temperatures

The North American coast and the Gulf Stream. Red colors mean warm waters, blue and purple colors mean cold waters. Sv means 1 km3/second.

What is the temperature of the Great Lakes (frontier between Canada and The United States of America)?

Prevailing winds in the Atlantic.

Winds are responsible for ocean surface currents

Water moves as a result of the wind, but at different depths the water moves in different directions. It is called Ekman transport

Temperature of North Pacific waters. Red is warm water, yellow and green is colder water, blue represents cold waters. The Ekman transport moves the water away from the coast, cold water with nutrients occupies their place.

Take note of the ocean temperatures and depth in the left figure. The water at 5 km depth has not reached 0ºC

The two orange squares are the places where cold saline water sinks to the bottom of the Atlantic and pulls the Gulf Stream and the Global overturning stream

Oceanic currents are very complex, as shown in this slide of the Antartic Ocean
