HISTORY IN THE OLYMPICS
•At the first modern Olympic Games in Athens 1896, no women competed, •De Coubertin felt that their inclusion would be "impractical, uninteresting, unaesthetic, and incorrect.”•Women first competed at the 1900’s Olympic games in Paris in both Tennis and Golf•In 1912 swimming events were incorporated•In 1928 track and field was introduced but quickly banned until 1960 because of the many collapsed female athletes at the end of the 800 meter race
CONTINUED..•Shooting events were introduced in 1984 -three position rifle, air rifle and sport pistol•In 2000 women were allowed to compete in weight lifting•In 2004 women competed in freestyle wrestling •For cycling in 2012 for the first time men and women competed in the same number of events however women had shorter distances•44% the Rio 2016 medals were awarded in woman events (highest ever)

1900’S-1920’SMinimal effort machines• Used the concept of vibration to help lose
weight and sculpt muscle• Claimed to melt and eradicate the fat• Machines were large containing a platform
and belt
• One would hold on to the rails while it shook
• Claimed to melt the fat away• 1920s woman's idea of active wear:
dresses, high heels, and pearls.
1930S–1940S
• Repetitive movement using one’s own body
• Women’s League of Health and Beauty aimed to bring fitness to the masses.
• attended group classes and wore black shorts and white satin vests.
• leg lifts, star jumps, touching the toes and more, in synchronized mass formations
• moves specifically designed to benefit the body.
1950-1960’S• In the 1950s, workouts were all about

1970-1980’S• Jazzercise• combination of aerobic exercise and
jazz dancing transformed the fitness industry

• This was the decade of aerobics.
1990-2000‘S• The 90’s and 2000’s were decades in
which fitness through dance • Street dance’ passed through school
yards, raves and local neighborhoods to become the fitness trend of choice
• It eventually seeped into dance studios and gyms, and people all over the country took to the floor to test their moves.
THE 2010’S
Zumba• Incorporating elements of hip-hop, soca,
salsa, samba, merengue and mambo• Zumba is an exciting workout • the Zumba program reaches 10 million
people in more than 90,000 locations across more than 110 countries, according to its website.
• Zumba classes have grown to also include programming for children (Zumbatomic) seniors (Zumba Gold), including classes in the water (Aqua Zumba), resistance training classes (Zumba Toning) and circuit classes
