Research and ConceptingThrough 4 senior stakeholder work sessions, 18 business team specific work sessions, 8 one on one interviews, and weekly core team work sessions we identified 3 major themes that define the human experience at the bank.

Implication of HierarchyThis observation that the bank has a clear universal mandate and is seeking to find ways to support its teams in a standardized way.

As a result design decisions must address a multiplicity of needs, often ambiguous, in a uniform way that supports the Bank’s mission.

Implication of Individual over CompanyThese observations told us that while we need to create one place for people to gather and work online, people need to work the way they want to.

The design must also preserve their sense of intellectual boundaries and the identity of their local work groups while still meeting the Bank’s vision and goals.

Implications: Cross MatrixThe Bank values flexible relationships between its organizations to meet the adhoc nature of the problems it solves.

As a result, tools that support the four key processes will be essential. Teams working collaboratively and remotely will be essential. Self reliance will also be important. Central knowledge management systems will be critical. Flexible communication tools will also be necessary for connecting experts located across the globe who have personal preferences for email clients and personal file repositories.
