Past Continuous

The past progressive (past continuous), puts emphasis on the course of an action in the past.

The emphasis: “ I was talking to the rats”.

Form:

There are some exceptions when adding (-ing) to any sentence. Let’s look below:

Exceptions in spelling when adding (ing) Example

Final e is dropped (but: (ee) is not changed Leave- Leaving

But Agree-Agreeing

After a short, stressed vowel, the final consonant is doubled Sit-Sitting

Put-Putting

Final (ie) becomes (y) Lie-Lying

Use of Past Progressiveputs emphasis on the course of an action in the past

Example: She was brushing her hair.

Two actions happening at the same time (in the past)

Example: While she was preparing dinner, he was washing the dishes.

Action going on at a certain time in the past

Example: When I was having breakfast, the phone suddenly rang.

Simple Past

The simple past is used to talk about actions or situations in the past.

Examples:

First, I went to supermarket.Then, I had lunch. I visited my cousins last weekend. I saw her boyfriend yesterday.

Regular Verbs - Affirmations The verbs in the simple past consist of particle ED at the

end, and for that, you must follow some rules:

- Verbs ending in E has only earn D: dance=danced - Verbs ending in a consonant + y, lose and gain IED Y: =

Studied study. - Verbs ending in a vowel + y, just make ED: play =

played. - Verbs ending in consonant + vowel + consonant, double

the last consonant and earn ED: stop = stopped

irregular verbs - Affirmations The affirmative sentences with irregular verbs make

up the subject if + past simple of the verb:

- I saw - She said

Interrogations (regular and irregular) The questions in the simple past of the auxiliary DID

ask for help (past DO) + the normal form of the verb: - Did you drink? - Did she sleep?

* Note that those in the past is the auxiliary DID, the main verb remains in its basic form.

Negative form Add the DID + NOT (did not) after the

subject (is for everyone): - You did not drink. (You did not take.) - She did not sleep. (She did not sleep.)
