Today, we will study: Factual questions Negative factual questions Inference questions

**Good note taking is extremely important for answering these questions

**These questions follow the order of the conversation/lecture. So, the first few questions will be in the beginning of your notes, the next few in the middle, and the last few at the end of your notes.

Listening Skills

Factual questions – supporting ideas and details of the conversation/lecture

These questions ask:

Who What When Where Why How

Listening Skills

Many of these questions start like this:

According to the man/woman ….. According to the professor...

If something is repeated in the conversation, there will probably

be a question about it. Example from p. 43

Student A: My project took 6 weeks to finish.Student B: 6 weeks! I can’t believe it……

There will almost always be a question about this. ‘How long did it take to finish the project?’

Listening Skills

Negative factual questions

These questions ask which choice is not true.

Example from page 48

Which of the following is NOT true about the length of a day on Venus?

o It is longer than an Earth dayo It is longer than an Earth yearo It is shorter than a Venus yearo It is shorter than a day on Jupiter

Listening Skills

Inference questions – For these questions, you have to make a conclusion

from the information in the conversation/lecture.

These questions start like this:

What does the man/woman imply about ____________? What does the professor imply about __________? What can be inferred from this lecture about ____________? What can be inferred about the man’s comment about
