Andy Warhol

Celebrity and Pop Art

What is Pop Art?

• Pop art is one of the major art movements of the twentieth century.

• It began in Britain and America in the mid to late 1950s.

• Key features include the use of bold colours, found images, reference to popular culture such as comics, advertising and films.

Andy Warhol made many images of celebrities, especially Marilyn Monroe.

Warhol’s favourite method was silk screen printing.

He often used repetition of the same image in his work.

Julian Opie

Gary Hume

Text and Image

• The influence of Pop Art can be seen in the work of contemporary artists and designers such as Barbara Kruger and Jamie Reid.

• They manipulate and subvert existing ‘found’ images by adding text to create a powerful ironic message.
