What is Pop Art?

• Pop art is one of the major art movements of the twentieth century.

• It began in Britain and America in the mid to late 1950s.

• Key features include the use of bold colours, found images, reference to popular culture such as comics, advertising and films.

Andy Warhol made many images of celebrities, especially Marilyn Monroe.

Warhol’s favourite method was silk screen printing.

He often used repetition of the same image in his work.

Create a portrait of a celebrity adopting the same method as Gary Hume. Keep things simple break the image down into basic shapes. Use flat colour.

• The influence of Pop Art can be seen in the work of contemporary artists and designers such as Barbara Kruger and Jamie Reid.

• They manipulate and subvert existing ‘found’ images by adding text to create a powerful ironic message.

Jamie Reid

Is a British born artist, most famous for his use of ‘ransom note’ style lettering.

Task

•Use an image of a celebrity.

•Tear areas away around the eyes and/or mouth for text.

•Stick down on a black background.

•Create a short message that relates to the person by using ‘ransom note lettering.’ The words could be lyrics, or famous quotations etc.

Use flat colour to create a bold and graphic image of a celebrity.Task

•Cut around your celebrity to create a silhouette.

•Stick this image onto a coloured background.

•Use tracing paper to trace some basic shapes you see in the figure.

•Transfer onto coloured paper of your choice and cut out.

•Like a jigsaw puzzle reposition your areas of flat colour on the portrait.
