An inadequate substitute

Solution? An interactive panorama

Additional context

X3D panoramas

Easily take a physical space and create an interactive, immersive digital version that allows those unable to visit in person a chance to explore the space and provide additional context

What is X3D

“X3D is a royalty-free open standards file format and run-time architecture to represent and communicate 3D scenes and objects using XML. It is an ISO-ratified standard that provides a system for the storage, retrieval and playback of real time graphics content embedded in applications, all within an open architecture to support a wide array of domains and user scenarios.”

-- What is X3D

X3DOM is a Javascript implementation of X3D

Why X3D?

...over other technologies like Flash, WebGL, Unity, etc.   Open, royalty-free, ISO standard dating back over 20 years

¡  1994 – VRML1 – static models only ¡  1997 – VRML2/VRML97 – moving/interactive worlds ¡  1999 – X3D – eXtensible, XML encoding, modular profiles, v.3.3 in Nov. 2013

High-level, declarative scene description (not imperative programming)   Encapsulates best thinking and practices from 3D graphics community   Content sustainability

¡  Human-readable ASCII plus efficient Binary encodings ¡  Widely supported as a static file format and interchange format ¡  Several open-source and commercial X3D viewer implementations

  X3DOM ¡  open-source JavaScript implementation ¡  HTML5 DOM model – no plugin required

Process for creating a panorama

1.  Take pictures 2.  Merge HDR (optional) 3.  Stitch panorama 4.  Convert to cubic 5.  Put in x3d

Panoramic photography

Any photo taking device can be used to take a panoramic photograph – quality is the issue

Cell phone   Rico Theta   DSLR camera   Gigapan

HDR

High dynamic range ¡  Multiple exposures merged later ¡  Lossless format, not JPEG ¡  Even cheap smartphones have this capability

Panoramas in x3d

You’ll have a mirrored view, flip your image.   Individual textures limited to ~16 million pixels

(4096x4096)   For higher quality split your sphere into a cube

Saladoconverter https://github.com/mstandio/SaladoConverter/downloads The ceiling and floor often can be low quality Individual cube faces can be further divided for even higher quality
