Evidence that Flipped Learning Works...

Means, Et Al. (2010). Evaluation of evidence-based practices in online learning: A meta-analysis and review of online learning studies. US Department of Education.

An ESL participant said, “the videos are much more user friendly than a lecture if you’re still learning the specialized vocabulary of a subject or of university in general. Being able to pause, rewind and look for other online resources is huge.” This was echoed by another participant who said, “[I] definitely [would have preferred] more flipped classes. [The videos] allowed me to pause to take notes [on] the important concepts and skills.”

“Students have so much pressure with all the deadlines they have to meet and all the [quizzes] that they have to do, so even if it’s just for participation marks that would be like another task that you have to tack onto the board. People differ in how much aid they need, and if you put that stipulation on it, it feels like a requirement that you have to do.”

When asked if classmates might superficially complete assignment if they were for participation marks only, one participant said, “oh yes, they would [game the system]… A lot of them… [laughter].”

What Subjects get the Best Flipping Results?

Hands on Group Activity… 5 min

1. Think of a class you’re teaching between now and the end of school that you think might be good on to try flipping. <- write it down.

2. Identify 2 - 4 learning outcomes that the students need to leave the class having learned or mastered. <- write them down.

3. Share what you’ve brainstormed with your small group. Share kudos and suggestions.

Homework....1. find one or two short youtube videos that speak to each of the

learning outcomes (short means 1-4 minutes each).2. Create a short multiple choice quiz with one or two questions

each that would help students know if they’ve “got” the main concepts.

3. Think of a small exercise that students could do to practice a basic level of skill or knowledge mastery & have them post results to the LMS as evidence they completed it (10-15 min tops).

4. For the in-class portion, think of hands on group activities they can engage in to begin to master the skills and/or concepts. Hopefully they can work on something that will help them move a larger project that they are working on forward.

Don’t Forget...Start Small with one or two classes… Let student get used to the new format.Start with learning outcomes and work backwards.Need to invest significant time to setup… use Open Access or Creative

Commons materials.Give students opportunities to have meaningful choice on

assignments, helps increase engagement & increases time spent doing learning activities.

Try to engage in Just-in-time learning not just-in case-learningNo throw away assignments that only student & teacher sees: Make

results as widely public as is ethically possible. Portfolios?Interleave short 2-3 min pre-class videos w/ activities & quizzes to

reinforce & not bore.Figure for your class the optimum mix of not grading, giving

participation marks, & graded assignments?
