How are How are you ?you ?

Fine, thanks.

I’m well, and you?

This is all that etiquette

requires . . .

No one need know all the gruesome

details of your existence

Emma had the consolation of being

polite when she actually felt rather

cross.

from Jane Austen’s Emma

Etiquette does not require that

you repress your feelings.

But you need not express

them to all and sundry

And wisdom and discretion may forbid it.

Often, we can acknowledge our feelings

in private and so

we need not act out our feelings in public.

Not everyone wants or needs to know exactly how we feel at every

moment.
