Is a system of social stratification.

People in India are socially differentiated throughclass, religion, region, tribe, gender, and language

Admission quotas, job reservations and otheraffirmative action initiatives, according to India'sSupreme Court, is based on heredity and is notchangeable.

After independence, the policy of reservation of jobsand positive discrimination based on caste systemwas formalized with lists of : Scheduled Castes (Dalit) and

Scheduled Tribes (Adivassi)

It has achieved much the same significance insocial, political and academic debates as ‘race’ inthe United States, ‘class’ in Britain and ‘faction’ inItaly.

The sole cause of discord and animosity is non-discrimination between the two segments ‘Jāti’(caste by birth) and ‘Varna’ (caste by profession).

BY THE END OF THE 19TH CENTURY THREE, BASIC VIEWS OF CASTE HAD EMERGED:

The incubus view that caste in all its forms is adivisive and pernicious force, and a negation ofnationhood;

The golden chain view that ‘caste’ as a Varna is to beseen as an ideology of spiritual orders and moralaffinities, and as a potential basis for nationalregeneration;

The idealised corporation view that Jāti is to beseen as a concrete ethnographic fact of Indian life, asource of historic national strengths and organisedself-improvement or ‘uplift’

MY OBSERVATIONS

“When we choose a mobile network, do we check whether Airtel or Vodafone belongs to a particular caste? No! We simply choose a provider based on best value or service. Then why do we vote for somebody simply because he belongs to the same caste as us?” -Chetan Bhagat, What Young India Wants

Conducting this survey gave an insight on the mindsets of people in the urban or upper class society with access to all basic facilities and education. Urban India is modern but it does not lack closet conservatives as well. People wish equality among castes but some are also not in favour of inter-caste marriages. This is a contradiction in itself. They say that marriages in caste ensure the prevalence of their customs and traditions. But on the other hand, they dislike prejudice amongst various castes. They are of this belief that castes in India despite bringing diversity to this country’s heritage hinder the unity of country.
