Reasons for GCD Program Creation
1. Need for elders to have meaningful roles within the nursing home.
2. Value placed on intergenerational relationships.
3. JHL’s commitment to community & youth.
4. Lack of mentors for at-risk youth & lack of understanding of college & career paths.
5. Workforce development critical strategic issue for JHL
• Shortages of geriatric professionals (eg MD, RN, & OT/PT).
‣ Reassessment of JHL’s existing intergenerational program.
7
Workforce Statistics
• There is an estimated need for 1.2 million new nurses by 2014. (CCLC, 2007)
• The number of people needing personal assistance and home health services is expected to more than double from 14 million in 2000 to 27 million in 2050. (Kaye et al, 2006)
• Only 8.0% of all RNs are under the age of 30. The average age of the RN population in the United States is 46.8 years.
• Approximately 4.2% are Black or African American (non-Hispanic); 3.1% are Asian, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander (non-Hispanic); 1.7% are Hispanic or Latino; 0.3% are American Indian or Alaska Native; and 1.4% categorize themselves as two or more races and non-Hispanic. (Minority Nurse, 2010)

Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences

“As we start a new school year, Mr. Smith, I just want you to know that I’m an Abstract-Sequential learner and trust that you’ll conduct yourself accordingly!”
