Union with Christ

Prelude Music

(† Indicates the congregation standing)

Approach, my soul, the mercy seatWhere Jesus answers prayer; There humbly fall before his feet,For none can perish there.Thy promise is my only plea,With this I venture nigh;Thou callest burdened souls to thee,And such, O Lord, am I.

† The Peace*

O wondrous love to bleed and die,To bear the cross and shame,That guilty sinners such as IMight plead thy gracious name.Approach, my soul, the mercy seatWhere Jesus answers prayer; There humbly fall before his feet,For none can perish there. ( John Newton, 1779)

The Call to Worship ................................................................................Psalm 63:1-5† O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you

The Lord be with you.

And with your spirit.

Let us worship God!

The Confession of Faith ................................. Westminster Larger Catechism, Q. 66†

Q: What is that union which the elect have with Christ?

A: The union which the elect have with Christ is the work of God's grace, whereby they are spiritually and mystically, yet really and inseparably, joined to Christ as their head and husband; which is done in their effectual calling.

The Old Testament Lesson ........................................................................... Psalm 19page 858 in the pew Bible

The Response

Doxology .........................................................................................Regents Square

6

Behold, the Lord’s hand is not so short, that it cannot save,or his ear dull, that it cannot hear;but our iniquities have separated us from Godand our sins have hidden his face from usso that he does not hear. Our mouths are filled with anger, our lips are quick to speak lies, our eyes are filled with illicit and unnecessary desires. Our feet are swift to run to eviland our thoughts are the thoughts of iniquity. We have lost our way and are far from the way of peace. The roads we travel are crooked and desperate. We hope for light, but behold darkness.Lord, only you can intercede and bring health to us.Only your strong arm can bring us salvation.May the Redeemer of Zion save us. Amen

The Assurance of Pardoning Grace ..........................................................Isaiah 6:5-6

“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”

The Pastoral Prayer and The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Whatever is true,Whatever is pure,Whatever is lovely,Whatever is worthy,Think on these things,Think on these things.

The Shorter Catechism, Question 37:

Q. What benefits do believers receive from Christ when they die? When believers die, their souls are made perfectly holy and immediately pass into glory. Their bodies which are still united to Christ, rest in the grave until the resurrection.
