President'sMessageWehavepassedthe60-daymarkofmypresidency,andIrealizenowthatmy90-dayplanwaslessthanfullydeveloped!Inthefirst60days,theExecutiveBoardapprovedandsignedmultiplecontracts,includingonewithYM(YourMembership)fortheredesignofour

websiteandtheotherwithTheReesGroup,tohappilyrenewourcontractforanotherterm.Keepingupwiththeday-to-dayrunningoftheboardisbusy,butthatwasexpected.Wehavebeendiscussingthechargesforourcommitteesandassistingthemwiththeongoingchallengesofachievingtheirgoals.Continuingeducationandorganizingtheannualmeetingaretimeintensiveandcriticalbutpredictableactivities.

However,itistheunexpectedthatisalwaysmorechallengingtodealwith.Wehavehadtheunfortunateneedtopauseseveraltimesrecentlytogrieveandrememberourdearcolleaguesandfriends.ThepassingofWendyCoe,ExecutiveDirectoroftheACVP,wasunexpected,andthelosswillbefeltonapersonalandprofessionalbasisforalongtime.ThelovelytributestotheenergyandprofessionalaccomplishmentsofNormLowesonourlistservwouldinspireanyonetotryhardertoappreciatelifeandsharetheirknowledgebyconnectingwithothers.

No,Ireallydidn’tknowwhatIhadsignedupforasIlookaheadtoensuringthatweupdateourconstitutionandbylaws,assessourfinancialsituation,anddetermineourabilitytofundraiseduringthistimeofcomplicatedlegalrequirements.WiththeassistanceofourEditor-in-Chief,BarbaravonBeustandWiley,wehavealreadystartedtomakechangesinmanagingthejournal.Thiswillensurethatitmaintainsthequalitythatyouhavebecomeaccustomedtobutisalsocompetitivewithinthiseraofrapidlyavailableonlinejournals.Luckily,Ihavenothadtosignanyexecutiveorders(sorry,Icouldn’thelpmyself)andworkwithanoutstandingboardandexecutiveteamwhoareascommittedasallofyouaretomakingtheASVCPflourish.Asatokenofmycommitmentandoptimismforthecontinuedsuccessofthesociety,IpledgedmyfinancialsupportforSharetheFutureinJanuary.Icannotaskyoutofollowmylead,butIwouldbethrilledifyoudid.

Insummary,despitethechallenges,servingallofyouinthiscapacityhasalreadybeenoneofthemostrewardingthingsthatIhavedonetodate.Istronglyencourageeveryoneofyoutogetevenmoreinvolvedwithourvaluablesociety.Wewantyou.Weneedyou.Youwon’tregretit!

AAVMCNamesDr.StevenL.StockhamasRecipientofthe2016AAVMCDistinguished

TeacherAward

TheAssociationofAmericanVeterinaryMedicalColleges(AAVMC)hasnamedDr.StevenL.StockhamfromtheKansasStateUniversityCollegeofVeterinaryMedicine(KSU-CVM)astherecipientofthe2016AAVMCDistinguishedTeacherAward,presentedbyZoetis.

Theaward,whichisconsideredthemostprestigiousnationalteachingawardinveterinarymedicine,recognizesexcellenceinprofessionalveterinarymedicaleducationandispresentedtoaneducatorwhosesustainedrecordofteaching

excellenceandability,dedication,characterandleadershiphascontributedsignificantlytotheadvancementoftheprofession.

"RecognizingtheoutstandingeducatorswhocontinuallyraisethebarinacademicveterinarymedicineisahighlightoftheyearfortheAAVMC,"saidAAVMCChiefExecutiveOfficerDr.AndrewT.Maccabe."Thesededicatedprofessionalsaredevotedtopreparingthenextgenerationofveterinariansandadvancingthefrontiersofscienceandmedicine.Thankstothem—andthosetheyinspirethroughtheirexcellence—thefutureofveterinarymedicineisbright.”

Dr.Stockham,whoretiredin2016,isprofessoremeritusoftheK-StateCVMDepartmentofDiagnosticMedicine/Pathobiology.Hereceivedconsistentlyhighstudentreviewsandmorethan30teachingawardsthroughouta36-yearteachingcareer.Histeachingphilosophyinvolvesengagingandmotivatingstudentsthrough“reallife”clinicalsituations,allowingthemtoacquireclinicalreasoningskillsthatleadtorewarding,lifelongprofessionalcareers.Clickheretoreadthefullpressrelease.

InMemoriam:Dr.NormLowesOnTuesday,January24,2017,theASVCPlostoneofouroutstandinglongtimemembers,Dr.NormLowes,afterhisvaliantbattlewithParkinson'sdiseaseandmalignantmelanoma.IfyouknewNormwelloreverhadtheopportunitytovisitevenbrieflywithhim,youimmediatelyunderstoodhiszestforlifeandourprofession.Hisradiantsmilerevealedhisloveforpeople.ThefollowingisanexcerptfromhisobituarypennedbyhiswifeLynda:

NormgrewupinthefarmingcommunityofAssiniboia,Saskatchewan,wherehecaredforinjuredandsickanimalsevenasayoungchild.Hiscompassionandloveforanimalsledhimtoadistinguishedcareerinveterinarymedicine,whichheproclaimedas“thebestprofessionintheworld,asyoucanmakeadifferencewithbothpeopleandtheiranimals.”HegraduatedfromWCVMwithadegreeinveterinarymedicineandsurgery,andlaterwithaMaster’sdegreeinveterinaryclinicalpathology.Hespenthiscareerdoingbothsmallanimalpracticework,emergencymedicineaswellasdiagnosticpathologyinseverallaboratoriesinWesternCanadaandEngland.NormwasthedirectorofthefirstprivateveterinarydiagnosticlaboratoryestablishedinVancouverandwasoneofthefoundingownersofCentralLaboratoriesforVeterinarians.Hewasapioneerintelecytology,bringingrapiddiagnosisturnaroundtopractitionersvialivestreaming.NormwasalsopassionateaboutsportsandplayedfootballfortheUniversityofSaskatchewanHuskiesduringhistimeatWCVMandwasnamedall-staroffensiveguard(1967)andall-starlinebacker(1969),whichledtoatry-outcontractwiththeSaskatchewanRoughriders.Inlateryears,hebecameanavidcyclistandadvocateforthebenefitofexerciseinmitigatingthesymptomsofParkinson’sdisease.ManypeopleinBrandonsawhimdiligentlycyclingdownHighway10ortheTransCanada.Readmore...

WendyCoe,ExecutiveDirectorfortheAmericanCollegeofVeterinaryPathologists,unexpectedlypassedawayonDecember25,2016.Itwasmyhonortohaveworkedwithherforthealmost12yearssheactedasExecutiveDirectorforACVP.

MuchofwhatACVPhasaccomplishedsinceshejoinedtheirteamin2004hasbeenbecauseofWendy’squietsupport

inthebackground.WendycherishedhervolunteersandCouncilmembers.Sheplacedrelationshipsaboveeverything,andwasalwayswillingtotakethetimetotalkthroughaproblemoraproject.Wendydidn’twanttobeinthelimelight,insteadpreferringtheroleof“backupsinger.”ForthoseofyouwhoknewWendy’stalents,shehadabeautifulsingingvoiceandsanginherchurchchoirformanyyears.Shelovedmusicofallkinds,andmusicisanaptmetaphorforherinteractionswithACVP.SheworkedeverydaytocreateharmonywithinACVP,toskillfullyandgracefullymovetheCollegeforward.Wendywasanappreciativeaudienceanddelightedinherinteractionswithindividualsshecalled“thesmartestpeopleintheworld.”

Wewillmissherlaugh,herexcellentadvice,herkindness,herunfailingsupportofeducationandtrainingfortheveterinarypathologistswithwhomsheworked,andherunshakableoptimism.Despitethetrialsandtribulationsofthelast12years,Wendyneverhadabadday.Sheoncesaidthatshesimplydidn’thavetimeforthem.DidImentionthatshewaswiseaswellaskind?

Wendy’scolleagueandfriendBruceWheelersaiditbest:“Yourwisdom,yourlaughter,thesimplegiftofyourpresencemadeourlivesricher.Youwillbemissed.Moreimportantly,youwillberemembered."
