In the first 60 days, the Executive Board approved and signed multiple contracts, including one with YM (YourMembership) for the redesign of our website and the other with The Rees Group, to happily renew our contract for another term. Keeping up with the day-to-day running of the board is busy, but that was expected. We have been discussing the charges for our committees and assisting them with the ongoing challenges of achieving their goals. Continuing education and organizing the annual meeting are time intensive and critical but predictable activities. However, it is the unexpected that is always more challenging to deal with. We have had the unfortunate need to pause several times recently to grieve and remember our dear colleagues and friends. The passing of Wendy Coe, Executive Director of the ACVP, was unexpected, and the loss will be felt on a personal and professional basis for a long time. The lovely tributes to the energy and professional accomplishments of Norm Lowes on our listserv would inspire anyone to try harder to appreciate life and share their knowledge by connecting with others. No, I really didn’t know what I had signed up for as I look ahead to ensuring that we update our constitution and bylaws, assess our financial situation, and determine our ability to fundraise during this time of complicated legal requirements. With the assistance of our Editor-in-Chief, Barbara von Beust and Wiley, we have already started to make changes in managing the journal. This will ensure that it maintains the quality that you have become accustomed to but is also competitive within this era of rapidly available online journals. Luckily, I have not had to sign any executive orders (sorry, I couldn’t help myself) and work with an outstanding board and executive team who are as committed as all of you are to making the ASVCP flourish. As a token of my commitment and optimism for the continued success of the society, I pledged my financial support for Share the Future in January. I cannot ask you to follow my lead, but I would be thrilled if you did. In summary, despite the challenges, serving all of you in this capacity has already been one of the most rewarding things that I have done to date. I strongly encourage every one of you to get even more involved with our valuable society. We want you. We need you. You won’t regret it! AAVMC Names Dr. Steven L. Stockham as Recipient of the 2016 AAVMC Distinguished Teacher Award The Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) has named Dr. Steven L. Stockham from the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine (KSU- CVM) as the recipient of the 2016 AAVMC Distinguished Teacher Award, presented by Zoetis. The award, which is considered the most prestigious national teaching award in veterinary medicine, recognizes excellence in professional veterinary medical education and is presented to an educator whose sustained record of teaching excellence and ability, dedication, character and leadership has contributed significantly to the advancement of the profession. "Recognizing the outstanding educators who continually raise the bar in academic veterinary medicine is a highlight of the year for the AAVMC," said AAVMC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Andrew T. Maccabe. "These dedicated professionals are devoted to preparing the next generation of veterinarians and advancing the frontiers of science and medicine. Thanks to them—and those they inspire through their excellence—the future of veterinary medicine is bright.” Dr. Stockham, who retired in 2016, is professor emeritus of the K-State CVM Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology. He received consistently high student reviews and more than 30 teaching awards throughout a 36-year teaching career. His teaching philosophy involves engaging and motivating students through “real life” clinical situations, allowing them to acquire clinical reasoning skills that lead to rewarding, lifelong professional careers. In Memoriam: Dr. Norm Lowes On Tuesday, January 24, 2017, the ASVCP lost one of our outstanding longtime members, Dr. Norm Lowes, after his valiant battle with Parkinson's disease and malignant melanoma. If you knew Norm well or ever had the opportunity to visit even briefly with him, you immediately understood his zest for life and our profession. His radiant smile revealed his love for people. The following is an excerpt from his obituary penned by his wife Lynda: Norm grew up in the farming community of Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, where he cared for injured and sick animals even as a young child. His compassion and love for animals led him to a distinguished career in veterinary medicine, which he proclaimed as “the best profession in the world, as you can make a difference with both people and their animals.” He graduated from WCVM with a degree in veterinary medicine and surgery, and later with a Master’s degree in veterinary clinical pathology. He spent his career doing both small animal practice work, emergency medicine as well as diagnostic pathology in several laboratories in Western Canada and England. Norm was the director of the first private veterinary diagnostic laboratory established in Vancouver and was one of the founding owners of Central Laboratories for Veterinarians. He was a pioneer in telecytology, bringing rapid diagnosis turnaround to practitioners via live streaming. Norm was also passionate about sports and played football for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies during his time at WCVM and was named all-star offensive guard (1967) and all-star linebacker (1969), which led to a try-out contract with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. In later years, he became an avid cyclist and advocate for the benefit of exercise in mitigating the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Many people in Brandon saw him diligently cycling down Highway 10 or the TransCanada. Read more... In Memoriam: Wendy Coe Written By: Susan Rees, ASVCP Executive Director, President and CEO of The Rees Group Wendy Coe, Executive Director for the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, unexpectedly passed away on December 25, 2016. It was my honor to have worked with her for the almost 12 years she acted as Executive Director for ACVP. Much of what ACVP has accomplished since she joined their team in 2004 has been because of Wendy’s quiet support in the background. Wendy cherished her volunteers and Council members. She placed relationships above everything, and was always willing to take the time to talk through a problem or a project. Wendy didn’t want to be in the limelight, instead preferring the role of “backup singer.” For those of you who knew Wendy’s talents, she had a beautiful singing voice and sang in her church choir for many years. She loved music of all kinds, and music is an apt metaphor for her interactions with ACVP. She worked every day to create harmony within ACVP, to skillfully and gracefully move the College forward. Wendy was an appreciative audience and delighted in her interactions with individuals she called “the smartest people in the world.” We will miss her laugh, her excellent advice, her kindness, her unfailing support of education and training for the veterinary pathologists with whom she worked, and her unshakable optimism. Despite the trials and tribulations of the last 12 years, Wendy never had a bad day. She once said that she simply didn’t have time for them. Did I mention that she was wise as well as kind? Wendy’s colleague and friend Bruce Wheeler said it best: “Your wisdom, your laughter, the simple gift of your presence made our lives richer. You will be missed. More importantly, you will be remembered." ASVCP First Calls for 2017/2018 Below is a list of First Calls for 2017. Please click the links below for more detailed information about each call.
