Reading

Mrs Ballett

Daily Supported Reading(DSR)Year One

What do the children say?

I like DSR because we have fun stories and

books. I liked working with my adult.

I have enjoyed DSR because I like answering questions about the book.

I Like looking at pictures and reading the words so I can find out more information.

What do the teachers say?

The children challenge unknown text well as

routine. There is more enjoyment with reading.

Comprehension and reading

have improved.

Children in Year 1 are now reading higher level books. DSR has also helped the

children to enjoy books and reading books. It’s lovely to see children enjoying books

again.

What is Daily Supported Reading?

• DSR is a group reading lesson that takes place 4 days a week, where each child reads with an adult.

•It takes place each morning at 9.00am and lasts for 25-30 minutes so punctuality is very important.

•There are 20 group leaders and each has a group of approximately 6 children. They will work with 1 group for a week.

•Children are individually assessed and then placed in groups of similar ability, and are led by a group leader.

•All members of staff have had DSR training. This ensures that all groups are taught in the same way.

•There is a weekly staff meeting.

•Each week book packs are planned and given out to each class to meet the reading level of each group.

•Children read two books each week. One on Monday and Tuesday, and a new book for Wednesday and Thursday.

•In this way the children are reading daily, learning to enjoy books, building their confidence, increasing their reading mileage, developing comprehension and building on their bank of common sight words.

Book Packs

•The books used for DSR were bought especially for the reading sessions.

•They are books which are written to closely link with the children’s oral language structures this will support fluent reading.

•There are also cut up sentences to help the children to construct a sentence from the story.

•Magnetic letters are provided in the lower books to spell simple common words.

Support at Home

•Do read with your child as often as possible. The more children read to you, the more fluent they will become.•Encourage your child to retell stories to you. Ask them to predict what they think will happen next. Ask questions and discuss the books.•Read widely! •Children will still bring home books from school a minimum of two or three times a week but they will not be the DSR books.

Reading in Year Two

• Continued daily focus on guided reading with our stock of guided reading books.

•Daily reading with individual readers.

•Parent volunteer Reading Buddies and TA Better Reading Partners.
