Where were you born?Washington, D.CWhere were you living and what

were you doing before you discovered little old Raglan?

Most recently…Rototuna. What I was doing was trying to figure a way to get out of compressed chaos.

What businesses have you been involved with in the States?

Owned and operated a New York style delicatessen, and various retail operations.

What attracted you to the Raglan area?

Peace, love, and unity. At least that was the gossip.

Fortunes transformed bycompetition wins

Brooke Bowes is one of those lucky people. She has won tickets, CDs and various other

prizes in competitions in the past. But nothing compares to being flown to Hong Kong for the red carpet event and world premiere of the latest Transformers movie.

Brooke, 20, made the draw for the ZM radio station’s Transformers: Age of Distinction competition a couple of weeks ago, and was called two days later to be told she had won.

“When they (ZM) called, I almost had a heart attack,” said Brooke, who is from Raglan but is currently living in Hamilton for her work.

Less than a week later, Brooke and her friend Heidi Tidmarsh, owner of The Bow Street Depot, were winging their way to Hong Kong for the June 19 release of the sci-fi movie, celebrating that night with champagne after checking into their “flash” hotel by the Hong Kong harbour.

Before the premiere Brooke and Heidi, the only ones from Australasia, met up with the other 28 lucky winners from around the world and walked across the road to the amazing Hong Kong Cultural Theatre.

“I didn’t actually think we were going to walk down the red carpet. But we did!”

They were then escorted to a special area, where the stars walked right past, with TV cameras, journalists, paparazzi and fans all around, before being seated inside for the movie. Brooke scored an autograph of lead actor Mark Wahlberg and lots of photos of the stars.

“The stars were just two rows behind us. We turned around and Mark Wahlberg was right there and I was like ‘oh my god!’,” Brooke said.

They watched the 3-hour long uncensored director’s cut of Transformers, the fourth in the series. Brooke has seen them all and rated the latest one, along with the first, as the best.

“I’m not really a sci-fi kind of girl. I don’t know what really appealed to me (about the Transformer series). It was just so exciting.”

But the excitement didn’t end there. The pair then had tickets to a special Imagine Dragons concert on the top of their 16-floor

hotel, complete with lasers, fire cannons and Chinese drums. The up-and-coming band wrote the song, Battle Cry, for the movie.

The rest of the three-day trip to Hong Kong was spent shopping… and shopping, indulging in Shanghai foot massages so they could keep going in the 35+ degree heat.

“We had one (Shanghai massage) every day – we had such sore feet from shopping so much”, Brooke said.

But the best bit for Brooke was still the red carpet and concert.

“It was fabulous. It was rock ‘n roll. It was … touch the stars,” summed up Heidi.

Raglan Library to reopen late JulyWith renovations on Raglan Library nearing an end, Waikato District Council is pleased to announce the building will reopen for business at 9am on Monday 28 July.

To allow staff to begin the move, the temporary site at 39 Bow Street will be closed for one day on Friday 11 July, so customers are asked to take care of any urgent Council business before this date.

From 14 July, Council services such as rates and dog registrations will continue to be offered from 39 Bow Street until 5pm 25 July, but library services will cease until the reopening of the library building to allow for books to be re-sited.

There will be a small selection of books available for reading at the temporary site, but books will not be issued during this period so customers are asked to return, renew or acquire any books beforehand, or are welcome to visit one of Council’s other libraries.

Waikato District Council General Manager Customer Support, Sue Duignan, thanked the Raglan community for their patience throughout the project.

“It’s great to be at this stage in the project where we can almost unveil the new space to its users. It’s looking good

and we are excited to have an enthusiastic group of Raglan placemakers working energetically to make the interior library space an interesting and creative one.”

Work began on the building in March 2014 to address a leaking roof and create more floor space.

Council completion date: Newly renovated library set to open July 28th

On the move: New BP2Go Raglan owner Jonno Buckley rubs shoulders with out-going owner Vicki Bradshaw

Waitetuna lass to star in world-premier musical

Area Fishing Report: by the Raglan Wharf Seagull

Again, very good bottom fishing outside Raglan harbour. We recently caught our limit of snapper two days in a row and in less than two hours. Great fishing.

The top half dozen fish being over 4kgs and all their bellies were empty, just mud - so they are on the worms. But they bit well and all were in good fat condition.

It was a full moon period and the area fished was up past Gibson’s beach in 30m of dirty coloured water.

In the mix we also caught kahawai of size and gurnard. There were a few spiny dogs but not the plague proportions like other winters.

A few local boats went out wide over these days for hapuku, bass, blue nose and gem fish.

Fresh cooked winter fish is the best, plus it is a great time to also smoke a few.

Flounder are still plentiful in our harbour.

The last rains flooded upper harbour creeks and streams and has seen the nets filling up with rubbish.

The new season starts for all fishing clubs on the first of July, and last season was good for recreational catches, with many fish caught pushing club records.

Play it safe on the water, double check local conditions and enjoy.

The Raglan Wharf Seagull.

Vicki Bradshaw had mixed emotions this week when she handed over the keys

of Raglan’s BP2Go to the new owners.

The service station and garage has been sold to Auckland-based Star Metro Holdings, which owns two other BPs, 24 Caltex stations and 12 Fix convenience stores in the North Island, plus a couple of Subways within those stores.

The Raglan service station has been in Vicki’s family for the past 25 years since her mum, Cherie Wells-Garrett, joined Graham Garrett in the business. He had bought the service station four years beforehand.

“They loved the locals. Mum had a real passion about getting out there and providing a service. She took great pride in washing the windscreen, checking the oil and all that,” Vicki said.

The garage was their life. Then Graham died of bone cancer two years ago, and Cherie died suddenly just over a year later from a blood clot. This left Vicki, the mother of three boys, to look after the business for the past eight months.

“I went from being a housewife and stay-at-home mum for the past 11 years to running this business from Auckland,” she said. “To sell this place is quite emotional to me, but I just couldn’t do it anymore.”

But she thinks her mum would have approved of the people who have bought it.

Jonno Buckley, one of the new owners, said Star Metro is run by two sets of brothers in a very “non-corporate” way.

Over the next year BP2Go Raglan would undergo some improvements, firstly to its food and coffee, then to its forecourt. Jonno would not rule out

a Subway being eventually included, “if it’s what the community wants and the numbers stack up”.

They were keen for the business to be run by locals and the staff would mostly remain the same. Current site supervisor Haley Soames would be joined by husband Logan, who would run the re-named workshop, he said. Logan had started his apprenticeship there with Graham Garrett.

So, it was a case of another husband and wife team running a family business. Vicki was pleased.

“I want to take the opportunity to thank the community for the support and love they’re shown us,” Vicki said. “I know Mum loved the place and I do too. It’s a beautiful place.” Rachel Benn

Local Waitetuna lass, Kersten Hickman, is all set to wow-the-crowds at the world premiere of New Zealand rock opera musical ‘State Highway 48’ in Hamilton this month.

Kersten, 38, has landed the female lead role in the locally written musical, which will play at Clarence St Theatre on 10-12 July.

The musical, according to Kersten, is based on the at-times “turmulous” journey of life at middle age.

“State Highway 48 is told through lyrics, melodies, and dance. It traces a typical middle-aged couple, their kids and their friends as they grapple with their daily lives, relationships and work.

“The story is geared around my character, Sharon, and her husband Dave who is played by local Waikato talent Bryan Bevege. Together Dave and Sharon grapple with ups and downs in their marriage, emotional health, and family life.

“One of the most standout thing about this particular show, is its relatability. The issues that are dealt with are real and raw and relevant to many people. But it’s also well-balanced with light-hearted humour,” she said.

State Highway 48 was written by renowned Hamilton musician Chris Williams and directed by Hamilton’s Nick Wilkinson, who was behind the successful local production of Jesus Christ Superstar last year.

When it premiers in July, State Highway 48 will be one of the only musicals written by a New Zealander performed to such a large commercial extent.

Kersten was approached about playing the role earlier this year by director Nick Wilkinson on the set of Phantom of the Opera in Hamilton.

“At the time both Nick and I were in the Phantom of the Opera cast. I was very flattered that he considered me for the role and I’m very glad I accepted. The State Highway 48 cast and I have been practising since May and we’re excited to share this musical with the region. Story continued on page 5

Barbara flanked, from left, by local Coastguard president Wally Hawken, Matt Sweetman who helped organise her Raglan visit and Coastguard member Gordon Jowsey.

With almost three decades of experience in the entertainment industry, it’s no wonder Kersten was selected as the star of the show.

“I performed my first show at 15 years old and have hardly stopped,” she said.

“I have been a member of the Hamilton Operatic for the past 20 years. Over the years I have also performed locally in the musical gypsy, the original cast of Les Miserables of 1995, and I took the lead in musical Slice of Saturday Night.

“I have been a featured soloist in many variety shows and also preformed at both Riverlea and Meteor theatres. My highlight would have to be playing the role of Gianetta in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Gondoliers.”

Hamilton’s Phantom of the Opera was Kersten’s most recent musical experience, which came after a seven year break to have a family.

A specialised reading recovery teacher at Raglan Area School and a mother to three children under 13 years old, it’s a wonder Kersten has any time to perform. But it’s the challenge that appeals.

“There was a period of time this year where I had no days off at all. As soon as Phantom of the Opera rehearsals would finish I would drive straight to State Highway 48 rehearsals. But it’s always nice to give yourself a challenge. It will also be nice to have a break!” she said.

But in the meantime it’s ‘all-go’ as the cast gets ready to perform in two weeks time.

“It’s rare for a home-grown musical to be written. We are all practising hard and are very excited to see how this takes shape. We look forward to entertaining and moving our audience with this powerful story,” she said. B Pawson

Nats’ choice goes to town on the roads less travelled

The woman odds-on to become the new Taranaki-King Country MP later this year

is set on becoming a “local” here. But don’t expect to see her out and about in Raglan too often as she also wants to enmesh herself in a whole string of other communities from Ohaupo to Ohura.

New Plymouth-based National Party candidate Barbara Kuriger says she and her husband Louis love being away from home and “aim to become locals in each of the towns of Taranaki-King Country”.

That may seem a pie-in-the-sky goal considering there are no fewer than 17 towns dotted up and down the vast electorate – and that parliamentary duties would also demand a lot of her time – but Barbara was upbeat on her plan when she called through Raglan recently on a pre-election “look, listen and learn” exercise.

“Yes, it’s a big area (the electorate),” the 55-year-old conceded. But she pointed out that just about every week for the past 10 years she’d travelled from New Plymouth through to Hamilton to fulfil commitments in the agribusiness industry, where her roles range from governance to coaching and leadership.

And that was only a part of her regular travels. “We live on the road and every week I’m going somewhere to get a real grasp of rural and regional New Zealand in particular,” she told the Chronicle. “I work from an iPod and an iPhone and go home to print (out) and re-pack.”

Though they have a house in New Plymouth she and Louis intended getting another base “up Te Awamutu way very close to Raglan, Kawhia and Otorohanga” after the elections, because 80 percent of the electorate lived on the northern side of Mt Messenger.

With Hamilton Airport also in the electorate it made even more sense to

live part of the time in the Waikato.“My heart’s in regional New

Zealand, not New Plymouth as such,” she added. “This is an electorate that suits my purpose.”

Barbara described their familiarisation travels around the sprawling electorate as a “95-day adventure” until the election. “It’s fantastic doing all this discovery,” she enthused. “We’re going to keep on the road and we’ll be back (to Raglan). I can’t represent a place if I don’t know about it.”

The Kurigers spent two days here on their recent stopover, visiting Raglan Coastguard and the local St John operation along with Raglan Area School, farms around Te Mata and businesses about town.

Barbara said that after listening to residents and businesspeople she saw a number of areas where she felt she could help Raglan as its MP.

She saw opportunities to advocate for incentives to bring new business into town, “especially those that can

form linkages with the technology businesses already here”.

And she was intrigued as to how to link up the town’s tourist and business ventures so that people stay on.

Raglan had a good area school but the opportunities for students to stay in Raglan as school-leavers were limited, she said. Many of the current businesses were seasonal and related to tourism, and it wasn’t possible for employers to offer fulltime work.

Barbara also saw opportunities to advocate on behalf of the “many volunteers who are helping to keep the services of the town going”, and believed there was continuing work to be done locally to ensure economics and sustainability went hand in hand.

“This is important for the farming community and also for groups who use natural resources,” she said. “Raglan is a place where many of those conversations come to the fore and it’s important that

we continue to talk about the issues and find ways to work through them, backed by good science.”

Barbara’s no stranger to coastal living, having grown up in the small Taranaki town of Opunake known, like Raglan, for its surf and more recently tourism. She is only National’s third candidate in the TKC electorate in 42 years, after Shane Ardern and former Prime Minister Jim Bolger.

Coincidentally all three went to Opunake High School. And like her predecessors she became a person of the land: she’s farmed in Taranaki with Louis since they married 35 years ago. They’ve won several

farming competitions and in 2012 Barbara was named the inaugural Dairy Woman of the Year.

Now they farm in partnership with each of their three adult children and partners, two in coastal Taranaki and one in Woodville in the Wairarapa.

That arrangement gives the couple the opportunity to still be part of family life – one which now includes their four grandchildren – and the freedom to travel about doing what they’re doing, explains Barbara.

There are, though, those agribusiness commitments and currently she’s on the board of directors for DairyNZ, Dairy

Training Limited, Primary ITO, Young Farmers, Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre, Te Kauta and the Dairy Women’s Network.

She’s also chair of the Primary Industries Capability Alliance and serves on the Venture Taranaki Trust.

Add in her latest commitment to represent the full stretch of the Taranaki-King Country electorate – and that she still milks the cows “about nine times a year” – and she’s set to be one very busy, well-travelled woman.

will be published in coming weeks.

Free golf lessions offeredIf you ever wanted to to give golf a go but

didnt have the sporting equipment or access to a club, then here is your chance to hit a ball and have some fun.

Free golf lessons for primary and secondary students will be held on the 7th and 8th of July at the Raglan Golf Course from 9-11.00am.

The lessons are at the introductory level. Just wear appropriate clothing, flat soled shoes and bring a smile.

To the Editor,Congratulations to Rodger Gallagher on

a well deserved award as volunteer of the year. May I point out a missing matter from the publicity. The museum society was a co-sponsor of Rodger for the award. We are very happy to recognise his considerable work over many years for the Raglan & District museum.

Despite the less than favourable weather

last weekend, hundreds of kids and adults still turned up to the camp ground on Saturday to enjoy the 'Snow on the Beach' and take a mid winter dip in the water.

With four more tonnes of snow than last year’s event and the cold weather keeping the snow nice and icy, the Snow on the Beach and Mid Winter Swim saw 250 to 300 people head to Te Kopua Domain to enjoy the winter festivities throughout the day.

With the cold southerly blowing, the organising team had to make a few adjustments but the day still went on as planned with kids getting plenty of snow time.

“Weather was always going to be an issue but it didn’t seem to stop the kids from having fun,” said Raglan Community House’s Tony Agar.

Now in it’s eleventh year running the Ray White Mid Winter Swim is almost a tradition for some. While the

blustery weather meant there wasn’t a huge turn out for the swim, twelve very enthusiastic competitors dove into the icy waters to race their way to the finish line.

NZ Masters Games swimming champion Peter Aim was first across the line, the 61 year old proving that age is no barrier, even when it comes to swimming in less than ideal water temperatures.

Dave Hanna presented Peter with a bottle of bubbly for his win in this year’s swim. Well done to all that entered and braved the arctic waters!

The Mid Winter Swim and Snow on the Beach is a community event that is kindly put on by the Raglan Community House and Raglan Real Estate Ray White. Thanks also to support from the Waikato District Council and Raglan Lions Club, Raglan Supervalue for the hot drinks and lollies for the lolly scramble, Te Kopua Campground providing kitchen facilities and the Maori Wardens for providing their usual fantastic services with parking and traffic control.

Local golfers perform well Putting down roots in Raglan

The Raglan Championship Pennants Team have spent the last 3 months, every second Sunday, traveling around the Waikato playing teams from other clubs in our division in a match-play competition.

Four other players who contributed to the teams success were Eddie Harihari, Aaron Thomson, Steve Hanham and Ray Brooks. The team made it through to the final against the Stewart Alexander golf team and were narrowly defeated five and a half to three and a half.

It was a great effort by the team considering we are a small

club with limited membership playing against large established clubs such as Cambridge, Te Awamutu and Waihi.

The Raglan Golf Club also entered a team of 10 to 12 players in the Prebble Cup, another Waikato regional golf competition, and were unfortunately knocked out in the 2nd round by Waitomo.

The teams would like to to thank the Raglan golf committee members for their support and Howard, our Greenkeeper, for keeping our course in pristine condition and 'Cre8tive Construction' for sponsoring our 'Pennants' team.

25 Years! It has been 25 years since Raglan and District has run a flower show.

That’s about to change now the Raglan Horticultural Society has announced it is running one in September. Further details on the date, location and finalized prize sections will be published in forthcoming weeks.

Our gardens: All is growing. It is so hot some afternoons that we have lost hundreds of small lettuce. They just wilted and rotted due to the heat and moisture. Some pansies planted in the open have responded the same way. Here today, gone tomorrow.

Spinach, brassicas, silver beet, broad beans, carrots, leeks are all flying and iceland poppies, stocks, pansies, violas, alyssum, lobelia are all flowering well.

Our spring could be very early. The sea temperatures are up; we are getting a lot of NE to E warm (wet) weather, and soil temperatures are

such that tomato, cucumber, marigold etc are self germinating.

Maintenance of soil is important this month, keep turning it over if in fallow. Pruning and trimming of hedges and bushes is important to let the light in. Planting of onion seed, garlic and shallot cloves is now. You still need frost tolerant plants or else they will need protection on cold evenings.

July Moon Phase: The full moon on the 12th, the new moon on the 27th. Plant seedlings from the 4th to the 12th. Prune from 19th to the 25th. Interestingly our sun in general rises 7.45am and sets 5.15pm, during August. It is half an hour earlier and later, so in August we gain an extra hour of sunlight.

Kids Giveaway. 6 punnets of 6 cabbages and 2 punnets of 6 cauliflowers. Just plant and grow.

See you someday leaning on your shovel.
