Basic Blocking VocabularyMany youth football coaches have heard GOD, GOO, MOMA, and GOL, but what do they mean? They refer to blocking rules. Here are a few rule blocking terms that you should include in your offensive blocking vocabulary.
GAP – refers to space between the linemen. GAP rule is block GAP toward the ball or play side for Center.
On or Over or Outside – On refers to the defensive linemen who are head up or outside shade of o‐lineman, Over refers to Linebackers – Outside Gap
Down – Continue blocking the next man on the line.
Downfield – Block down field
GOD – Gap ON Down or Downfield or near Defender
GOLD / GODLI – Gap On LB Near Defender or Down / Gap On Down Inside LB
GOO – Gap On Over or Outside (Use for pass blocking and backside TE with a hinge block)
GOOP – Gap On Outside Pass (this is my main pass blocking call)
ION / IOD – Inside Gap, On / Inside Gap On Defender or Down
MOMA – Man on Man Away ( Good Center Rule)
Linebacker – block the most dangerous Linebacker
GOL – Gap, ON, Linebacker
Inside or Outside – block d‐linemen in the GAP or On the next lineman to his inside or block outside gap and over for outside call.
Fill – Tells lineman to block any defender in pulling lineman’s area
SAB – Severe Angle Blocking – track angle blocking scheme at 30% angle on play side either in or out. “Larry” = Left & “Roger” = Right
Track – blocking a zone or area not a single defender – like on a railroad track anything gets in way then block
JAW – Inside SAB Track Call – Simplified GOD call.
BBS@# ‐ Butt to Butt Split block @ called hole ‐ Split Block @ 6 hole = BB6
GOD is probably the most popular youth football blocking rule. If you are not using blocking rules with your youth offensive line, you should develop a set of simple rules today. For younger players I use JAW which is a simplified GOD inside track blocking call.

* The following formations / plays can be run left or right. I’ve only drawn up the play to one side. I personally like to
line up my unbalanced side to my sidelines and or Left.
The UBSW is the traditional Unbalanced Single Wing (UBSW) formation developed by Pop Warner. The TB is behind the Center maybe offset L/R gap or over OG, FB is next to TB over K-Guard or KG Gap and the QB/BB1 is near or floating
between OTs and K. Depth and spacing can change on play and or direct snap to BB1. Some coaches may have the 3 RBs compacted closer to the Tailback, equal, spread out or slanted. In the traditional UBSW, I have the 3 backfield backs in a
tight slant and adjust based on the play call but try not to be too obvious. Some may have the FB and TB align side by side. I may also have the closer or deeper to line of scrimmage based on play and or snap issues. The Ends can also align Nasty width a 3-foot gap split if desired. The WB can also align wider or tighter to accommodate play; blocking, release, motion,
exchange timing etc. I will also set up in an Even Offensive Line for Passing and Counters plays on occasion of if I am having backside DE issues.

The Swing / Tweak formation is a hybrid Single Wing Spinner formation we used when running the UBSW back in 2006 and 2007. Since we also run DW and some WILDCAT Spread as base formations, this Swing UBSW formation is modified for a more traditional QB1. The FB4 will replace the Blocking Back from the Base 1 traditional UBSW.
The Tweak (TB-Weak) formation moves the Tailback to the weakside WB of the formation and the WB3 will come into the backfield aligning as deep as QB and behind the OTs. See smaller diagram below for Tweak alignments. In Swing the TB2 may adjust to be even with QB1 or slightly back depending on play responsibilities.
These two alignments let us take advantage of the SW/DW Spinner “Speed” plays we run in the Power Wing Beast Offense and the Wildcat Multi Spread Offense. Both the TB2 and WB3 are set up similar to Wing-T backs for motion or no motion to get outsideon wide sweeps. We will also move often into Even Offensive Line sets for these two formations. We can also Flip the FB4 to weakside.

I’ve been playing around with the ND Box formation since 2006. I like this Single Wing formation. My Cake formation comes out of this formation along with the Squad formation. In this variation, the Box is shifted left and or right. You can also align in the middle but that’s not staying with my SW definition for this Single Wing playbook.
For the Box plays in this eBook I took the basic Beast plays that I run a ton of and turned them into Box Plays.
