A Message from our President
Annual Fund Raiser will be held on Thursday, August 21, 2008, at the Napa Senior Center.
Members received their raffle tickets and we request that you return them by August 18 so that
they will be included in the drawing. Included in the envelope with your raffle tickets was a
membership card with the date you joined the Society. You need to add your name to the card
and it can be used when you visit other Genealogy Libraries. We still need volunteers to sell the
raffle tickets at the Napa Wine Train Station. The cost of the raffle tickets is the same as last
year, $5.00 each or 3 for $10.00. Our entertainment for the fund raiser on August 21 will be
harpist Angel Simmons. We are asking our members to bring an hors d'oeuvres or desert to the
event as we have in the past. We will begin at 6:30 PM and the entertainment will begin at 7:00
PM. The raffle drawing will be at 8:00 PM. We hope you will be able to attend and enjoy the
evening.
VOLUNTEERS STAFFERS NEEDED
Some of our regular Library Staffers are unable to continue staffing at the Library and we need
some new volunteer staffers. The dates that we need to fill are the second Thursday of the
month from 10-1 and 1-4; the third Tuesday of the month from 10-1; and most of the fifth Tues-
days, Wednesdays, and Thursdays of the month. If you are interested and would like to become
more involved with our Library, please contact Christine Peterson at cpatrose@comcast.net at
your earliest convenience. Christine will give you the training needed to be a Library Staffer
which is usually just being there so patrons can use the Library. Our Library is only open when
volunteer staffers are available.
Dick Bruechert,
NVGBS President
What are your strengths? If you would be willing to help a member in your particular area of interest, please let us know.
Are you good a deciphering old handwriting?
Did you thoroughly research Colusa County, California or Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania?
Did you explore an internet archive site that would help someone else?
Do you do a surname or family newsletter?
Are you quite familiar with a research facility?
Can you translate a German document?
Have you explored and used many features of a genealogy soft-
ware program?
Can you bake a killer batch of cookies for our program refresh-
ments?
Is greeting patrons from the front desk just your cup of tea?
Do you have a program inside you just waiting to get out?
We all could benefit from your help. Please give us a call or e-mail
us (see front page) with your offer of assistance.

Jabber from Janice
I want to share with you very interesting article from NGS Newsmagazine ,
V. 34, No. 2 (April-June 2008). It is entitled Adding ‗final pension payment
voucher‘ to the researcher‘s toolbox ,by Alycon Trubey Pierce, CG.
Most pensions were payable as of the 4th of March and the 4th of September of each
year. These were not sent by mail but needed to be collected in person by the pensioner (or his rep-
resentative with a power of attorney). Using Treasury Department records, you can trace an ances-
tor‘s path after receiving the pension. These records track the payments as they were disbursed from
the various pension agencies throughout the country. Paperwork was collected from the pensioner to
prove his identity or from whomever he had given his power of attorney. Much of the basic informa-
tion from the original pension file is included as well as current residence and previous residence.
He was usually accompanied by character witnesses who would vouch for him. This would be the
oath of identity. Next the certification by the magistrate would create more validation. If the pension
was not collected by the pensioner, the voucher will include the power of attorney to identify the
person collecting the pension on behalf of the pensioner. Also included in the papers would be the
receipt signed by whomever collected the pension payment. If the pensioner died, the surviving
widow or surviving children would need to go through a similar batch of paperwork proving their
identity and connection to the pensioner.
The National Archives staff have collected these pension agency vouchers and created a collection
―Selected Final Pension Payment Vouchers, 1818-1864‖ Some published abstracts are also available
for the states of Alabama, DC, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode
Island, South Carolina and Virginia. Hopefully, in the future all these vouchers will be microfilmed
and indexed for our use.
Hot tips (based on a PC with Windows XP): Have you found a genealogy site online that mentions some tidbit that you would like to print
out...just a paragraph or two? You really don‘t want the whole item and certainly not 6 pages of
information. Here is an easy print tip:
Highlight the area that you are interested in by placing the cursor at the start and hold down
the left mouse button and drag the shading to the end of the portion of interest. When you
have it highlighted, click on the File Menu at top and click on Print and choose Selection
rather than All or Pages. Then hit Print and you will just print out the portion you desire.
This will not work if you are doing a left mouse button click to get the instant menu. You
must use the menu at the top of the screen.
The telephone book and the computer screen just seem to get smaller and smaller as I get older
and older Newer computers set the default of 1024x768 pixels. By switching to 800x600, you
can change the resolution on the screen to increase the size of everything. Here is how:
Right click an empty are of the Windows Desktop and choose Properties from the popup
window. Click on the Settings tab and under ―Screen Resolution,: move the slider to the left
until 800x600 appears. Then click on apply at the bottom. See if you like it. If so, click OK,
if not slide it back and click ok. You can always change it back by going through this proc-
ess again.
Happy Surfing,
Janice

EDUCATIONALLY SPEAKING
Our granddaughter and I just finished a HUGH project. Our daughter was
celebrating her 50th birthday. Her daughter (our granddaughter) decided
to compile a scrapbook showing 50 years of her life. We began by shop-
ping for an acid-free scrapbook and various supplies and papers for the
pages. All our photographs were in file boxes or old albums that were not
acid-free. They were not filed in any particular order...what a job to sort thru all those!! Some of her
baby pictures showed her with her maternal grandmother, who died when she was five years old. I
started by making piles on the dining room table and attempting to make some order of them. To
my surprise, I ran across some special treasures, ribbons that she had won at horse shows, badges
from girl scout days, essays that she had written in school and report cards. We included them also.
The moral to this story is:
Begin this process now and don't wait as I did. If you have children, this makes a beautiful and last-
ing gift.

Membership Message from the Membership Chairperson, Karen Burzdak:
Did you find your new membership card? It was sandwiched in with the raffle ticket packet you
received in the mail. If you need a new one—no questions asked—leave a message at the library or
contact our membership chairperson, Karen Burzdak, at karenb@napanet.net. New members will
receive their cards in the mail individually.
What do you do with the new membership cards, you ask? Sign your name, laminate if desired, and
us for identification in other genealogy libraries. Or use them to remind yourself when you should
submit your dues.

Catalogs and searches of libraries http://www.worldcat.org/ You will need to sign up
but it is free. You can do a search for books on your surnames or regions of interest and
then you may be able to order them from your local library or they may be in a nearby
library.
There is new stuff going on at the LDS FamilySearch Lab site where you can check out
the latest ideas for the website and enter your feedback: www.labs.familysearch.org/
On the Records Search, there are many ways to narrow down a surname search that are
quite amazing. Try it out.

A Library Explored-Allen County Public Library!
Napa Valley Genealogy Society member, Carole Fisher, shared her
expertise with fellow members as she recounted her recent visit to the
Allen County Public Library in Ft. Wayne, Indiana; a library famous
for its genealogical resources.
Carole provided the group with handouts outlining the library‘s re-
sources and maps of the research center.
Carole reviewed her preparation for research. She carries a brief case
with her laptop and folders containing important data and useful forms.
She provided copies for members of the two research forms that she has developed. The first is a
chronology report that outlines her family‘s location and history of events. The second is a research
log which is completed by state and county listing the events and records that need to be researched.
If the library does not permit patrons to bring in laptops or other items, these forms are all that she
takes in.
Carole compared Allen County Public Library to the Salt Lake City Genealogy Library. She finds
that the ACPL is more compact and user friendly.
Her audience was most appreciative of her response to questions and for the wealth of information
provided. Thank you, Carol.
Smashing Brick Walls
Send in your letters or e-mails for our column. You never know
who might have an answer for you.
Letters can go to the address on the front page OR, better yet, e-
mail me directly at jancoxbrown@comcast.net.
I am hoping that someone can help me with my brick wall. I have never been able to find the parents
of John STEWART.
Here is what I know: The last John Stewart I know about was born in 1828 in Scotland. He married
Mary MCFADDEN in Glasgow, Scotland and they moved to Northern Ireland. Apparently, John's
parents did not approve of his marriage and disowned him. All I know about the parents is that the
dad was named (or nicknamed) Whitey Stewart and that he outlived his son John. Therefore, he
lived past 10 October 1871, for that is when John died. I also know that Whitey lived in Scotland
and had a brother named Hugh Stewart. Any help finding out about Whitey Stewart would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much,
Angel Stewart
