Text CommentaryAfter this I heard what seemed to be the loud

voice of a great multitude in heaven, crying out,

“Hallelujah! Salvation and glory & power belong to

our God, for his judgments are true and just; for he

has judged the great prostitute who corrupted the

earth with her immorality, & has avenged on her

the blood of his servants.” Once more they cried

out, “Hallelujah! The smoke from her goes up

forever and ever.” & the twenty-four elders & the

four living creatures fell down & worshiped God

who was seated on the throne, saying, “Amen.

Hallelujah!” & from the throne came a voice

saying, “Praise our God, all you his servants, you

who fear him, small & great.”” (Rev 18:21–19:5)

A. CELEBRATION IN HEAVEN: GOD’S JUSTICE FOR DESTROYING BABYLON (19:1-5)

Main Point: God will avenge the blood of His people on ‘Harlot Babylon’ – godless &

idolatrous, materialistic society. She will be totally destroyed forever

• ‘a great multitude in heaven crying out “Hallelujah’ for he has judged the great prostitute –

CONTRAST 1: REACTION TO BABYLON’s FALL. Earth-dwellers mourn (Ch18)

heaven’s response is ‘Hallelujah!’. The contrast of responses magnifies how far the

hearts of the kings & merchants of the earth (ch 18) are from God

• God’s angels & elect will celebrate 5 things:

i. ‘Salvation & glory & power belong to our God’ – His greatness ii. ‘for his judgments are true and just’ –His judgments

iii. ‘for he has judged the great prostitute who corrupted the earth’ – Babylon’s judgment, which she deserves for corrupting the world. All suffering & death is her fault

iv. ‘& has avenged on her the blood of his servants’ – retribution for the saints

v. ‘her smoke goes up forever’ – she will never be rebuilt. There will never again be a

lasting wicked society. There will be an everlasting reminder of her destruction

• Celebration anticipates completion of Babylon’s judgment at Christ’s return. This is

God’s answer to the saints’ prayers in Ch 6:

A. Celebration 1: Babylon destroyed B. Celebration 2: Lamb’s wedding feast C. King of kings, riding to war D. Great Feast for Carryon Birds E. Armageddon

[3] “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

[4] “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

[5] “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

[6] “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

[7] “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

[8] “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

[9] “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

[10] “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom

of heaven.

(Mt 5:1-10)

example

An ‘inclusio' is a literary device used to structure written materials. The writer states the main theme or idea at both the beginning and end of a literary section, by using similar words or phrases, which therefore act as ‘bookends’ to the section.

Also known as bracketing, or enveloping, it's intended to introduce and conclude a section by clearly stating the main point or theme. Everything in-between the ‘bookends’ is an expansion on the main theme. An ‘inclusio' defines sections.

“ “

definition

An inclusio is used to bring structure to literary works by defining sections, and to

emphasise and clarify the main points or themes of those sections

The ‘judge & avenge our blood’ ‘inclusio’ tells us the judgment of Babylon at Christ’s return will

fulfil the ancient eschatological theme that God will vindicate & avenge His people

PSALM 79

O God, the nations have come into your inheritance; they have defiled your holy temple; they have laid Jerusalem in ruins.

They have given the bodies of your servants to the birds of the heavens for food, the flesh of your faithful to the beasts of the earth. They

have poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them.

We have become a taunt to our neighbors, mocked and derided by those around us.

How long, O LORD? Will you be angry forever? Will your jealousy burn like fire? Pour out your anger on the nations that do not know you,

and on the kingdoms that do not call upon your name! For they have devoured Jacob and laid waste his habitation.

Do not remember against us our former iniquities; let your compassion come speedily to meet us, for we are brought very low. Help us, O

God of our salvation, for the glory of your name; deliver us, and atone for our sins, for your name’s sake!

Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Let the avenging of the outpoured blood of your servants be known among the nations

before our eyes! Let the groans of the prisoners come before you; according to your great power, preserve those doomed to die! Return

sevenfold into the lap of our neighbors the taunts with which they have taunted you, O Lord!

But we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise.

“Hallelujah! Salvation and glory & power belong to

who was seated on the throne, saying, “Amen.

Hallelujah!” & from the throne came a voice

saying, “Praise our God, all you his servants, you

A. Celebration in Heaven: God’s justice for destroying Babylon (19:1-5)

• Jesus’ 2nd coming culminates Babylon’s 3 phase judgment: 1) Harlot destroyed in civil

war at mid-point of Gr-Trib (Ch 17); 2) AC’s global network of wicked idolatrous cities,

destroyed at 7 Bowls (Ch16); 3) AC, False Prophet, wicked kings & their armies

Armageddon (Ch19)

• Past tense guarantees Babylon’s judgment

• Note the threefold salvation theme: 1) Saints’ salvation & reward goes hand in hand

with 2) destruction of the wicked, and 3) the coming of God’s kingdom. There can be

no worldwide Zion without the destruction of worldwide Babylon. Christ’s must judge

B. CELEBRATION 2: LAMB’S WEDDING FEAST (19:6-10)Main point: In antithetical contrast to Babylon, the reward that awaits God’s faithful saints

is a new life of unprecedented intimacy with God & infinite blessing under His care

• Hallelujah!’ – celebration of Christ’s coming. Celebrating 2 particular things

i. ‘the Lord… Almighty reigns’ –• ‘God’s reign is a direct consequence of his judgment of Babylon. He’s

demonstrated He’s the Omnipotent divine king by deposing Babylon

• Ends 7th Trump phase: Ch 19’s events bring to a close the 7th Trump phase. This phrase serves to ‘close the brackets’ which ‘opened’ with the same phrase

at 11:17, at the sound of the 7th trump.

ii. ‘marriage of the Lamb has come’ – CONTRAST 2: HARLOT BABYLON’s FATE BRIDE’s FATE. In contrast to Harlot, who was destroyed by ‘her man’, Jesus

will consummate His eternal love covenant with us at His return. Contrast magnifies awful fate of God’s enemies, & wonderful reward of the faithful

• No actual ceremony: There is only a declaration that the Bride is ready, and the wedding feast has come. Revelation does not actually portray the wedding itself. This

section is not placed here for chronological reasons, but for rhetorical reasons. 19B

juxtaposes the destiny of God’s Bride against the fate of the Harlot in 19A.

• So when does the wedding feast take place? After Christ’s coming. His 2nd coming to

receive His Bride after an extended and undefined period of absence from her corresponds to the presentation of the Bride to the Groom, after an extended and

undefined period of absence, in Jewish marital tradition.

A. Celebration 1: Babylon destroyed B. Celebration 2: Lamb’s wedding feast C. King of kings, riding to war D. Great Feast for Carryon Birds E. Armageddon

Click to edit Master title styleBride of Christ / Wife of God metaphor in scripture

For your Maker is your husband, the LORD of hosts is his name; and the Holy One of

Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called. (Is 54:5)

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good

news to the poor… to proclaim… the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of vengeance

of our God…. I will greatly rejoice in the LORD; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has

clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of

righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress,

and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. (Is 61:10)

For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not be quiet, until her

righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch… You shall

be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.

You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate,

but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her… for the LORD delights in you… as the

bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. (Is 62:1–5)

I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know the LORD. (Ho 2:20)

“When I passed by you again and saw you, behold, you were at the age for love, and I

spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness; I made my

vow to you and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Lord God, and you

became mine. (Eze 16:8–10)

“The days are coming… when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the

house of Judah, not like the [Old covenant], my covenant that they broke, though I was

their husband, declares the LORD. For this is the covenant that I will make…: I will put

my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall

be my people. [and] they shall all know me [intimately]” (Je 31:31–34)

For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since I betrothed you to one husband, to present you

as a pure virgin to Christ. (2 Co 11:2)

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her… so

that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such

thing, that she might be holy and without blemish… “Therefore a man shall leave his

father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This

mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.

However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she

respects her husband. (Eph 5:25–33)

“The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his

son, and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they

would not come… [some] seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them.

The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned

their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were

not worthy. Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many

as you find.’ And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they

found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests. “But when the king

came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. And he

said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was

speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him

into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ For

many are called, but few are chosen.” (Mt 22:1–14)

OLD TESTAMENT NEW TESTAMENT

Marriage metaphor describes an eternal future of intimate Communion with God,

which will commence with the 2nd coming of Jesus, & fulfils Isa 61-62 promises

1) Happens at time of the Day of Vengeance of the Lord

2) Wedding clothes are ‘garments of salvation’ – fruit of saving faith

B. CELEBRATION 2: LAMB’S WEDDING FEAST

• made herself ready– has 2 meanings:

• Collective: the full harvest has come in (Rev 14:15-16; Rom 11:25)

• Individual: responsibility for our state of readiness at His coming

• fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints – Our eternal attire will be our ‘righteous

deeds’ in this life. Another element of the contrast between Babylon & Zion: those of Babylon focus on ornate & expensive clothing & earning money needed to pay for their

Vanity Fair; saints prepare heavenly attire by devotion to good works, not fashion

• it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright & pure – our righteousness

originates in grace. First, we are washed & made clean by His grace. Then grace

automatically produces good deeds (the new nature). The righteous deeds are neither of the flesh (legalism), nor absent (since grace results in righteous living):

• “By grace you have been saved through faith… this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a

result of works… For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which

God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Eph 2:8–10) • ‘work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and

to work for his good pleasure.’ (Php 2:12–13)

• “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

gentleness, self-control.” (Gal 5:22–23)

• ENCOURAGEMENT: The saints WILL prepare themselves. This is both the guaranteed result & final proof of salvation. Saints remain “faithful” (2:10, 13; 13:10;

14:12; 17:14), maintain their “testimony for Jesus” (1:9; 6:9; 12:11, 17; 20:4), endure

hardship (1:9; 2:2–3, 19; 3:10; 13:10; 14:12), and obey God’s commands (12:17; 14:12). The Spirit of Christ in us causes this response to hardship

Text Commentary“Then I heard what seemed to

be the voice of a great multitude,

like the roar of many waters and

like the sound of mighty peals of

thunder, crying out, “Hallelujah!

For the Lord our God the

Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice

and exult and give him the glory,

for the marriage of the Lamb has

come, and his Bride has made

herself ready; it was granted her

to clothe herself with fine linen,

linen is the righteous deeds of

the saints. And the angel said to

me, “Write this: Blessed are

those who are invited to the

marriage supper of the Lamb.”

And he said to me, “These are

the true words of God.” Then I

fell down at his feet to worship

him, but he said to me, “You

must not do that! I am a fellow

B. CELEBRATION 2: LAMB’S WEDDING FEAST

• ‘Blessed are those who are invited’ – overcomers: come out of Babylon, are faithful

until the end (Rev 12:11; 15:2; 22:14). Mixed metaphor.

• As a collective, we are the Bride.

• As individuals, we are the guests at His wedding ceremony & end times

banquet (Isa 25:6-7; Mt 22:1-14;)

• ‘the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy’ – the ultimate acid test of true prophecy: Jesus Christ is exalted as Saviour & Eternal King

• CONCLUSION: God gives us a glorious hope to anticipate – The Marriage of the Lamb to (we) His Bride. This marriage is a metaphor for God’s biblical promise of an

eternal paradise characterised by intimate, unbroken Communion with God that commences after the 2nd coming of Jesus & His destruction of God’s enemies.

Contrasting this hope to the fate of Babylon should keep us faithful to Jesus until the

end

C. RETURN OF THE KING OF KINGS (19:11-16)

Main points:

1) Jesus is the true King of kings.

2) He will return as a man of war to judge the nations, and establish God’s kingdom

on earth.

3) At His 2nd coming He will fulfil all the OT prophecies of the coming Messiah.

• ‘heaven opened’ - God is about to act on earth in a decisive way (cf. 11:19 &

15:5, where heavenly temple is opened prior to great interventions of War in

Heavens, and then the 7 Bowls of Wrath)

• a white horse! One sitting on it – this is the most glorious description of Christ

as Warrior King & Messiah in scripture

• Roman Triumphal march imagery used: white horse; crowns; title; army

following.

• Triumph imagery used before battle because victory is so certain

C. RETURN OF THE KING OF KINGS (19:11-16)

• 3 categories of Christ’s characteristics revealed in Rev 19:

1) 2x General; 2) 3x Judicial; 3) 4x Kingly

1) GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS & MISSION

i. Faithful & True – perfectly faithful to Father God & us; acts in truth

ii. in righteousness he judges & makes war- 2nd coming is to judge & war

against & destroy all opposition to His eternal gov’t of perfect justice

2) JUDICIAL CHARACTERISTICS

iii. ‘the name by which he is called is The Word of God’ – He is the

manifestation of perfect wisdom. Hence He is qualified to judge in truth

iv. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations’–

• Power of life & death - Sword was symbol of Roman authority over life &

death, held by emperor & his governors. But Christ alone has final

authority of life & death.

• Emphasises Jesus’ judicial role, & instrument - the Word of Power.

He spoke the universe into being (Jn 1), by His Word He upholds the

universe (Heb 1:3), & each life owes its existence to Him (Col 1:17). He

simply speaks His will & it is done. Judgm’t merely requires His Word.

• Fulfils Isa 11 expectation of Messiah (see (1) below).

v. ‘eyes like a flame’– sees our hearts & minds, judges truly, based on

perfect knowledge

C. RETURN OF THE KING OF KINGS (19:11-16)

3) KINGLY CHARACTERISTICS

vi. ‘on his head are many diadems…On his robe & thigh he has a name

written, King of kings & Lord of lords’ –

• Fulfils Dan 7 & Ps 2 Messianic expectation – the King of kings. But

Jesus is the One given all power & authority in heaven & on earth (Mt

28:16-20; Dan 7:14; Ps 2)

• In contrast to Caesar (at time of writing) & AC (in end times), who are

wrongly addressed by the same title.

CONTRAST #4: Christ is repeatedly presented as the TRUE King of kings,

in true majesty & glory, juxtaposed against the usurper the AC

C. RETURN OF THE KING OF KINGS (19:11-16)

3) KINGLY CHARACTERISTICS (cont…):

vii. name written that no one knows but himself – Infinite majesty. Was

common in ancient times to believe all beings had a hidden name that

contained their true essence. Revelation of His name = revealing HIM in a

way previously unknown (see Ex 6:3). Only part of His infinitely wonderful

nature has been revealed to date. Some of His majesty will be revealed at

His 2nd coming. More to discover in the next life.

viii. ‘clothed in a robe dipped in blood’ –

• Fulfils calling of Isa 63 Messianic Warrior King

• Personally involved in releasing the 7 Bowls of wrath, & then

Armageddon, destruction & death on mankind blood spattered robes

ix. ‘& the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white & pure, were following

him on white horses’–

• Armies are primarily the saints – ‘They will make war on the Lamb, &

the Lamb will conquer … those with him are called & chosen & faithful.’

(Re 17:14)

• Armies of heaven can easily drive evil off the planet. But in mercy, God

gives time to repent, until the time for vengeance

D. GREAT FEAST OF GOD FOR CARRION BIRDS (19:17-18)

Main point: Jesus’ 2nd Coming will fulfil the prophecies of the great end times battle between God & His enemies

• to all the birds… “gather for the great supper of God, to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of

mighty men… & the birds were gorged with their flesh’ –

(tangent… Gog & Magog

Page 63: The Revelation of Jesus Christ: An Illustrated Overviewrevelationofchrist.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/S21-Revelation-S… · past 3 rows’ Winepress of wrath summarises next 3

The Gog & Magog prophesy (EzekCh 38-39):

1) When does it happen?

2) Is it the same as Armageddon?

3) How does it relate to other end times battles in prophecy?

1. G&M appears to be the final Armageddon battle since Many outcomes of G&M appear to be

the same outcomes only true after Armageddon. In Ezel Ch 38-39, after G&M: o It is the time of God restoring Israel's fortunes, spiritually and materially (39:25-29)o Israel will have no more enemies (39:26)o God will pour His Spirit on Israel - this definitely happens post-armageddon (39:29)o The nations will know that God is God (38:19; 29:6-7)o God's name will not be profaned anymore o Israel will know that God is their God from that day forward (39:21-23)o The nations will know Israel went into captivity for sinning against God (39:21-23)

2. YET there appear to be contradictory scriptures which make it seem that G&M is unlikely to be

Armageddon

i. Israel will be living in peace, not under threat of war, when G&M attacks. Only time Israel is

likely to have peace before the Millennium is 1st half of tribulationo Before Tribulation - surrounded by Islamic nations sworn to destroy Israel, plus the

heightened conflict around Israel rebuilding the templeo After AOD – ‘war decreed until the end’ (Dan 9:27; Dan 11-12), and the AC will hate Israel

and invade Israel several times (Dan 11:29-45)

ii. Gog will be buried in Israel - vs. AC thrown alive into lake of fire

• Yet Gog could be an underling of AC - not AC himself. This could be merely one of

many forces coming against Israel

iii. G&M invasion force seems to be a different group of nations with a different intent to the

Armageddon force. G&M war is a major group of nations going to plunder Israel,; Armageddon

is all nations going up against God in Israel

• But G&M could be merely one of many armies coming into Israel

3. There are only 2 ways to harmonise all of these ‘clues’ with the end times storyline:

1. G&M is likely to take place within first 3.5 yrs of Tribulation

2. G&M is the Armageddon battle. The reason Israel is at peace is because they have

accepted their Messiah & have confidence in Him despite AC

4. #1 poses 2 difficulties : o Why would the Lord deliver Israel in this G&M battle, only to later deliver Israel up to her enemies

in the next battle (AOD, Zech 13)?

- Potentially to reveal to the whole world that the God of Israel is the true God and Allah is a

deception? o Why does it seem like the outcome of G&M is that Israel and the nations know that God is God, if

the Great Tribulation follows (where the Nations are in rebellion against God)?

- Maybe the G&M battle is viewed as a part of the broader process of God judging the earth

and delivering Israel's enemies. Hence, although in the specific battle there are some

differences vs. the actual final battle of Armageddon, the outcomes described by Ezekiel are

the outcomes of the broader judgment process over the 7 year tribulation

5. More likely, the answer is #2 – G&M IS the Armageddon battle. Israel is at peace at this time

because they have accepted their Messiah and have confidence in God delivering them,

despite their extremely hostile surroundings

• Fulfilment of Gog & Magog battle (Ezek Ch 38-39)

• Therefore, Ezek 38-39 sheds much more light on this battle, esp. key nations

• Symbolic of being scorned & detested by God. Ancient M-Eastern cultures feared lack of proper burial,

some suspicious about effects in afterlife. Culturally, a proper burial was expected; failure to do so was a

sign of utmost scorn. For jews, it was a curse for corpse to be eaten by birds & beasts (Deut 28)

• CONTRAST #3: 2 Feasts. Saints invited to Lamb’s Feast. Rebels ARE the feast for carrion birds

• ‘of all men, both free & slave, both small & great’ –

• Forms inclusio with 6th Seal

• Inclusio informs us that the events anticipated by men in 6th Seal now find their conclusion in Rev Ch

19: ‘the great day of their wrath has come”. The broad ‘day of God’s wrath’ begins at 7th Seal, proceeds in

escalating intensity through the Tribulation, & climaxes with the 7 bowls of God’s wrath & Christ’s return

• CONCLUSION: Christ is God’s prophesied Saving Warrior King. At His return, He will destroy God’s enemies

A. Celebration 1: Babylon destroyed B. Celebration 2: Lamb’s wedding feast C. King of kings, riding to war D. Great Feast for Carrion Birds E. Armageddon

The kings of the earth & the great ones & the

generals & the rich & the powerful, & everyone,

slave & free, hid themselves…” (Re 6:15–17)

“Come, gather… to eat the flesh of kings, …of

generals… of mighty men, … & of all men, both free

and slave, both small and great.” (Re 19:17–18)

Text Commentary& I saw the beast & the kings of

the earth with their armies

gathered to make war against him

who was sitting on the horse &

against his army. & the beast was

captured, & with it the false

prophet who in its presence had

done the signs by which he

deceived those who had received

the mark of the beast & those who

worshiped its image. These two

were thrown alive into the lake of

fire that burns with sulfur. & the

rest were slain by the sword that

came from the mouth of him who

was sitting on the horse, & all the

birds were gorged with their flesh.”

E. ARMAGEDDON (19:19-21)

Main point: Armageddon is not even a battle. Jesus will crush the AC, False Prophet, all hostile kings &

armies all together, in an instant, merely by showing up

THOSE WHO WAR AGAINST HIM – ALL PEOPLE WHO ALLY WITH WICKEDNESS

• I saw the beast & the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make war against him’ -

• This is a straight continuation of 7th Bowl of wrath, & describes the actual battle at Armageddon

• God’s enemies: 1) beast & 2) the kings of the earth 3) their armies.

Due to demonic deception released at 6th Bowl, Beast will succeed in deluding world Rulers & military

leaders into going to war against Jesus. They will be so demonised & wicked & they will hate Jesus

so much, they will consciously choose war against Him even after seeing Him come in clouds of fire!

• Even though the Beast gathers the nations, God is the ultimate force behind their gathering:

‘I will… put hooks into your jaws, & I… bring you out, & all your army… a great host… In the latter days I will bring you against

my land, that the nations may know me, when through you, O Gog, I vindicate my holiness before their eyes. (Eze 38:4-16)

• CONTRAST #5: Believers experience Christ’s 2nd Coming as a victory over evil followed by a

celebratory feast; Unbelievers experience it as the Final World War, defeat, & judgment

HIS VICTORY – TOTAL, INSTANT, EASY

• ‘beast & false prophet captured … thrown alive into the lake of fire’ –the men & the spirits that possess

them will immediately be thrown into Hell. Fulfilment of Dan Ch 7 victory of God’s Messiah

A. Celebration 1: Babylon destroyed B. Celebration 2: Lamb’s wedding feast C. King of kings, riding to war D. Great Feast for Carrion Birds E. Armageddon

But on that day… my wrath will be roused in my anger…

- there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel… all the people who are on the face of the earth, shall quake at my presence. And

the mountains shall be thrown down, and the cliffs shall fall, and every wall shall tumble to the ground.

- I will summon a sword against Gog on all my mountains, declares the Lord GOD. Every man’s sword will be against his brother.

- With pestilence and bloodshed I will enter into judgment with him

- and I will rain upon him and his hordes… torrential rains and hailstones, fire and sulfur….

- I will give you to birds of prey of every sort and to the beasts of the field to be devoured

(Eze 38:18–23; 39:4–5)

- I will strike every horse with panic

- and its rider with madness

- I [will] strike every horse… with blindness

- Then the clans of Judah [will have] strength through the Lord of hosts… And they shall devour to the right and to the left all the

surrounding peoples

(Zec 12:4–6)

- And this shall be the plague with which the LORD will strike [them]:

- their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet

- their eyes will rot in their sockets

- their tongues will rot in their mouths.

- And on that day a great panic from the LORD shall fall on them, so that… the hand of the one will be raised against the hand of the other.

- And a plague like this plague shall fall on the horses, the mules, the camels, the donkeys, and whatever beasts may be in those camps.

(Zec 14:12–15)

Jesus will speak judgment on His enemies at Armageddon, resulting in horrifying

plagues that kill His enemies without Jesus lifting a finger

The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle! Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that

the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory! (Ps 24:7–10)

The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” The Lord sends forth from Zion

your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies! … he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath. He will execute

judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth. (Ps 110:1–6)

Who is this who comes from Edom, in crimsoned garments from Bozrah, he who is splendid in his apparel, marching in the

greatness of his strength? “It is I, speaking in righteousness, mighty to save.” Why is your apparel red, and your garments

like his who treads in the winepress? “I have trodden the winepress alone…; I trod them in my anger and trampled them in

my wrath; their lifeblood spattered on my garments, and stained all my apparel. For the day of vengeance was in my heart,

and my year of redemption had come… I trampled down the peoples in my anger; I made them drunk in my wrath, and I

poured out their lifeblood on the earth.” (Is 63:1–6)

Hasten and come, all you surrounding nations, and gather yourselves there. Bring down your warriors, O LORD. Let the

nations stir themselves up and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations.

Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Go in, tread, for the winepress is full. The vats overflow, for their evil is great.

Multitudes, multitudes, in the valley of decision! For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. The sun and the

moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining. The LORD roars from Zion, and utters his voice from Jerusalem,

and the heavens and the earth quake. But the LORD is a refuge to his people, a stronghold to the people of Israel. (Joe

3:11–16)

‘There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. And the Spirit of the

LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge

and the fear of the LORD. And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. With righteousness he shall judge the poor, and

decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his

lips he shall kill the wicked. (Is 11:4)

“I have cut off nations; their battlements are in ruins; I have laid waste their streets so that no one walks in them; their cities have been made

desolate, without a man, without an inhabitant. I said, ‘Surely you will fear me; you will accept correction. Then your dwelling would not be cut

off according to all that I have appointed against you.’ But all the more they were eager to make all their deeds corrupt. “Therefore wait for

me… for the day when I rise up to seize the prey. For my decision is to gather nations, to assemble kingdoms, to pour out upon them my

indignation, all my burning anger; for in the fire of my jealousy all the earth shall be consumed…Behold, at that time I will deal with all your

oppressors… At that time I [will] gather you together… when I restore your fortunes before your eyes,” says the LORD. (Zep 3:6–8; 19–20)

The LORD reigns, let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad! Clouds and thick darkness are all around him; righteousness and

justice are the foundation of his throne. Fire goes before him and burns up his adversaries all around. His lightnings light up the world; the

earth sees and trembles. The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim his

righteousness, and all the peoples see his glory. All worshipers of [idols] are put to shame (Ps 97:1–7)

For he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples in his faithfulness. (Ps 96:13)

“The LORD of hosts will come down to fight on Mount Zion and on its hill… the LORD of hosts will protect Jerusalem; he will protect and

deliver it; he will spare and rescue it.” Turn to him from whom people have deeply revolted, O children of Israel. For in that day everyone shall

cast away his idols of silver and his idols of gold, which your hands have sinfully made for you. “And the Assyrian shall fall by a sword, not of

man; and a sword, not of man, shall devour him; and he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be put to forced labor. (Is 31:4–8)

A stream of fire issued and came out from before him; a thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before

him; the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened. “I looked then because of the sound of the great words that the horn was

speaking. And as I looked, the beast was killed, and its body destroyed and given over to be burned with fire. As for the rest of the beasts,

their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time. “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds

of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. (Da 7:10–13)… And the

kingdom and the dominion and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most

High; his kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.’ (Da 7:27)

Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the

LORD and against his Anointed, saying, “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” He who sits in the heavens laughs;

the Lord holds them in derision. Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, “As for me, I have set my King on

Zion, my holy hill…. I will tell of the decree: The LORD said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will make the

nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a

potter’s vessel.” (Ps 2:1–9)

Click to edit Master title styleIsa 2The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. It shall come to pass in the latter days that

the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be lifted up above

the hills; and all the nations shall flow to it, and many peoples shall come, and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of

the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.”

For out of Zion shall go the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall

decide disputes for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks;

nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in

the light of the LORD.

For you have rejected your people, the house of Jacob, because they are full of things from the east and of fortune-tellers

like the Philistines, and they strike hands with the children of foreigners. Their land is filled with silver and gold, and there is

no end to their treasures; their land is filled with horses, and there is no end to their chariots. Their land is filled with idols;

they bow down to the work of their hands, to what their own fingers have made. So man is humbled, and each one is

brought low— do not forgive them!

Enter into the rock and hide in the dust from before the terror of the LORD, and from the splendor of his majesty. The

haughty looks of man shall be brought low, and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled, and the LORD alone will be

exalted in that day. For the LORD of hosts has a day against all that is proud and lofty, against all that is lifted up—and it

shall be brought low; against all the cedars of Lebanon, lofty and lifted up; and against all the oaks of Bashan; against all

the lofty mountains, and against all the uplifted hills; against every high tower, and against every fortified wall; against all

the ships of Tarshish, and against all the beautiful craft. And the haughtiness of man shall be humbled, and the lofty pride

of men shall be brought low, and the LORD alone will be exalted in that day. And the idols shall utterly pass away. And

people shall enter the caves of the rocks and the holes of the ground, from before the terror of the LORD, and from the

splendor of his majesty, when he rises to terrify the earth. In that day mankind will cast away their idols of silver and their

idols of gold, which they made for themselves to worship, to the moles and to the bats, to enter the caverns of the rocks

and the clefts of the cliffs, from before the terror of the LORD, and from the splendor of his majesty, when he rises to terrify

the earth. Stop regarding man in whose nostrils is breath, for of what account is he? (Is 2)
