Highlights of 2014 State Exam ResultsIn each of our regions, Uncommon Schools demonstrated strong performance and growth in both Math and English Language Arts.

Uncommon New York City outperformed New York State on both the Math and English Language Arts exams.

• 57%ofUncommonNYCstudentsscoredProficientorAdvanced in Math – reversing the achievement gap by performing more than 10 percentage points higher than thestatewideproficiencyrateofwhitestudents(45%)and more than 20 percentage points higher than the citywideandstatewideproficiencyrates(34%and36%).

• UncommonNYCisnarrowingtheachievementgapinEnglish Language Arts, from our students scoring 10 percentagepointsbelowtheproficiencyrateofwhitestudentsstatewidelastyearto4percentagepoints this year.

• 81%ofourUncommonNYC3rdand4th graders scored ProficientorAdvancedinMathand55%inELA.Theyclosed the achievement gap with white students statewide,andscored28percentagepointshigherthanlast year in Math and 9 points higher in ELA.

• 34%ofUncommonNYCstudentsareproficientinELA–morethan5percentagepointshigherthanthecitywideproficiencyrate(28%)and3percentagepointshigherthanthestatewideproficiencyrate(31%).

• 71%ofUncommonNYC8thgradersscoredProficientorAdvancedontheMathexam–morethan3timesthecitywideandstatewideaveragesfor8thgraders(23% and22%).

• LeadershipPrepOceanHillElementaryAcademy,where98%ofstudentsareAfrican-AmericanorLatinoand81%qualifyforFreeorReduced-PriceLunch,ranked#3amongallelementaryschoolsinNewYorkStateinMath.99%scoredProficientorAdvancedontheexam,with89%scoringattheAdvancedlevel.

• The8thgradersatLeadershipPrepBedfordStuyvesantMiddleAcademy,100%ofwhomareAfrican-AmericanorLatinoand78%ofwhomqualifyforFreeorReducedLunch,ranked#3among8th graders at all schools in the entirestateinMath.94%scoredProficientorAdvancedon the Math exam, more than four times the citywide averagefor8thgraders(23%).

Uncommon Newark (North Star Academy) continued its stellar performance on the NJASK exam, increasing overall proficiency rates and the percentage of students scoring at the Advanced level.

• Everysingle3rdand4th grader at our elementary schools scoredProficientorAdvancedontheNJASKinMath,with40%achievingaperfectscoreand93%scoringattheAdvanced level.

• 96%of3rdand4thgradersscoredProficientorAdvancedontheNJASKinEnglishLanguageArts.

• 88%ofNorthStarAcademy5th-8th graders scored ProficientorAdvancedinMath,increasingthepercentageofstudentsscoringAdvanced(40%)by9pointsover last year.

• 75%ofNorthStarAcademy5th- 8th graders scored ProficientorAdvancedinEnglishLanguageArts,increasing the percentage of students scoring Advanced (12%)inELAby3pointsoverlastyear.

• Whenstatewideresultsareavailablelaterthisfall,weanticipatethatNorthStarAcademywillcontinuetoreverse the achievement gap and to be at or near the top of the state in terms of performance.

Uncommon Troy strongly outperformed the Troy City School District in Math and English Language Arts.

• 60%ofUncommonTroystudentsscoredProficientorAdvancedontheMathexam–over4timestherateofTroyCitySchoolDistrictstudents(13%).

• StudentsatUncommonTroyincreasedMathproficiencyratesby27percentagepointsoverlastyear,ascomparedtoa1percentagepointincreaseintheTroyCitySchoolDistrict.

• 21%ofUncommonTroystudentsareproficientinEnglishLanguageArts–morethan6percentagepointsmorethantheTroyCitySchoolDistrictrate(15%).

Uncommon Boston (Roxbury Prep) outperformed the Boston School District in both Math and English Language Arts. • 52%ofRoxburyPrepstudentsscoredProficientorAdvancedinMath–15percentagepointshigherthanthecitywideproficiencyrate(37%).

• 57%ofRoxburyPrepstudentsscoredProficientorAdvancedinEnglishLanguageArts–7percentagepointshigherthanthecitywiderate(50%).

• Our8th grade students continue to reverse the achievementgapinMathwith68%scoringProficientor Advanced – 10 percentage points higher than the proficiencyrateofwhitestudentsstatewide(58%).

• Our6thgradestudentsatourMissionHillcampushadthe highest overall ELA and math performance in the school’s15-yearhistory,with72%and70%respectivelyscoringProficientorAdvanced.

Uncommon Rochester dramatically outperformed the Rochester City School District.

• 41%ofUncommonRochesterstudentsscoredProficientorAdvancedontheMathexam–almost6timestherateofRochesterCitySchoolDistrictstudents(7%).

• 55%of8thgradersatUncommonRochesterscoredProficientorAdvancedontheMathexam,ascomparedto1%ofRochesterCitySchoolDistrictstudents.UncommonRochesteraccountsfor3%ofall8th graders testedinthecityofRochester,but39%ofallstudentswhoscoredProficientonthe8th grade math exam.

• 22%ofUncommonRochesterstudentsscoredProficientorAdvancedinEnglishLanguageArts–morethan4timestheproficiencyrateofRochesterCitySchoolDistrictstudents(5%).

• JayStreetElementary3rdgradesawa30percentagepointincreaseinstudentsscoringProficientorAdvancedinELAanda56percentagepointincreaseinProficientorAdvancedinmathcomparedtolastyear’s3rd grade results.
