This Research study is part of a Project jointly

funded by DOST MIMAROPA (DOST-GIA fund) and the Romblon

State University

General Objectives

To design, fabricate, test the performance and determine the economic viability of a tiger grass pollen remover con wood working machine.

Specific Objectives1. To design and fabricate the

components of the tiger grass pollen remover con woodworking machine:–Pollen Remover Assembly–Wood Working Unit–Driving mechanism –Frame

Specific Objectives2. To conduct performance testing to:

a. determine the average time consumed in removing tiger grass pollen at different speeds using 5-inch and 7-inch pulley sizes and different nylon brush length;

Specific Objectives

b. determine the average number of stalks damaged at different speeds using the 5-inch and 7-inch pulleys and different nylon brush length;

Specific Objectives

c. determine the average length of detached tips from the stalks at different speeds using the 5-inch and 7-inch pulleys and different nylon brush length;

Specific Objectives

d. Determine the appropriate pulley size and nylon brush length suited to attain the maximum performance of the machine;

Specific Objectives

e. determine the time consumed in making a broom handle

Specific Objectives

3. To determine the economic viability of the machine

Rationale

• Two municipalities in the province of Romblon are known to be the major producers of tiger grass (luway)

• 400 hectares were planted with tiger grass with more farms being established each year for the past three years (DOST-PSTC-Romblon)

Rationale

• In Dona Juana, San Agustin, Romblon, 400 farmers are engaged in tiger grass farming and the annual value of harvest is estimated to be 4 Million pesos.

Rationale

• In Marigondon Norte, San Andres, Romblon, a study conducted to 100 farmers revealed that the annual income per farmer ranges from P2,500 – P150,00 depending on the size of the farm (Fetalvero, et. al.)

Rationale

• 86 of the farmers get their income mainly in tiger grass farming alone and the remaining 14 are farmer – processor

Rationale

• Most of the dried luway produced are sold to wholesalers and agents in different municipalities in the province and nearby provinces like Mindoro.

Rationale• the traditional way of removing

tiger grass pollen is by striking and shaking manually and it took 10-15 minutes per bundle.

• The traditional way pause hazard to the constituent especially the children since pollen is being flown by wind

Rationale

• Manual cleaning needs manual power and women can’t do it the way man can.

• Manual cleaning also cause damages to the stalk

Rationale

• According to a study the most common problem encountered by tiger grass farmers is the absence of modern tiger grass processing facilities

Rationale

• The usual handle of the broom produced is made from the stalks of the tiger grass

• Some uses wood from tree branches but complained of the handle’s irregular shape which is not attractive to consumers

Rationale

• Others used plastic rattan to cover the irregular shaped handle to be attractive but it also entails additional cost

Rationale

• If processing will be extensive, the annual estimated income of 1 to 2 Million may be increased to 3.6 to 7. 3 Million pesos

Conceptual Framework

METHODOLOGY

METHODOLOGY

METHODOLOGY• The statistical tool used in this

study is T-test to determine the pulley size and nylon brush length suited to attain the maximum performance of the machine. A statistician was consulted for the statistical analysis.

METHODOLOGY• Five methods in determining

the economic viability were tried, the internal rate of return, the future worth method, the present worth method, external rate of return and annual worth method

Advantages

Portable, equipped with pollen catcher for safety and health purposes, affordable, can be used for other wood working purposes aside from handle making especially during tiger grass off season.

Machine Cost Php 25, 000.00

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

• The machine performs well at the least average time of 1.21 minutes using 7-inch pulley and 3-inch length of nylon brush;

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

• The study revealed that there is no stalk damaged in using the 7-inch pulley using different length of nylon brush.

• The detached tips from the tiger grass revealed as having the shortest with 2.28 inch using the 7 inch pulley and 2 ½ inch nylon brush.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

• During the test conducted to determine the performance of the machine, it was revealed that there is no significant difference in using the 5-inch pulley and the 7-inch pulley using the different nylon length.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

• A skilled operator can make one handle at an average time of 5 minutes using a 2 x 2 x 24 inch commercial lumber while a novice operator can make one handle at a time of 10-15 minutes using the same wood and size.

• Since the design of the machine is simple and its components are easy to fabricate, grass pollen remover machine must be utilized to help ease the burden of tiger grass farmers and processors in Romblon and other tiger grass producing areas in the Philippines;

CONCLUSIONS

• With proper coordination in transferring the technology, an ordinary fabricator can easily duplicate the machine;

CONCLUSIONS

• The wood working unit of the machine can produce a uniform handle which the broom maker can select the handle to be used for different purpose;

• It can also produce a handle which could be replaced with a recyclable polyvinylchloride (PVC) pipe.

CONCLUSIONS

• The developed tiger grass pollen remover machine must be utilized to increase income and the wood working unit to produce quality handle;

RECOMMENDATIONS

•Transfer the technology;

RECOMMENDATIONS

• Conduct further study for the total mechanization of the tiger grass pollen remover machine
