KARACHI, Feb 10:

Sonam Kapoor-starrer"Neerja", based on real incidentsduring the hijacking of the PanAm Flight 73 at the Karachi air-port in 1986, has been banned inPakistan allegedly for showingthe country in poor light.

In an unusual case the filmhas been banned here withouteven being submitted to the cen-sor boards.

The Ram Madhvani-directedmovie revolves around NeerjaBhanot, a flight attendant onboard a Pan Am Mumbai-NewYork flight, who was shot deadby terrorists during the hijackingwhile trying to save the lives ofpassengers.

Advertisements of the moviein some newspapers had shownits release across many cineplex-

es and single screen theatres inPakistan on February 19 but ithas emerged that the ministry ofcommerce had initially author-ized the import of the film butlater changed their decision.

"The ministry issued us a NoObjection Certificate (NOC) toimport the film and bring it toPakistani territory but later onrevoked the NOC," an officialwith IMGC Entertainment said.

Mobasher Hasan, who headsthe Central Board of FilmCensors (CBFC), said that thedecision to not allow import ofthe film had come from theinformation and commerce min-istry.

"The film was never broughtto us for censorship," he said,adding the commerce and infor-mation ministry had also askedthe Pakistan Electronic Media

Regulation Authority (PEMRA)to ensure that "Neerja" is notshown on cable channelsthroughout Pakistan.

An official at the commerceministry said that due to objec-tionable nature of the contentwhich portrayed Pakistan in

poor light the certificate toimport the film was revoked.

IMGC Executive DirectorAbid Rasheed admitted thatthere were certain anti-Pakistanelements in "Neerja" and itshowed Muslims in negativelight.(PTI)
