Schedule of Special Events in July
At the time the July BUZZ went to print, all listed TCoL activities were accurate and scheduled to be offered as advertised. As circumstances are everchanging during these times, some activities may have since been modified, postponed,
or canceled. Please check the TCoL website at www.thetcol.org or give us a call at (920) 939-3088 for the most current activity information.
Greetings from Liz
4 | The Thompson Center on Lourdes
Last July the Thompson Center on Lourdes reopened our doors after being closed
for almost 4 months due to COVID-19. Although we opened with limited activities,
days and participants we had hope. Most organizations have never faced so much
change in a short period of time. The focus of TCoL was to ensure a safe place for
our participants to come and attend enriching activities. The question on everyone’s
mind was “when will we get back to normal”. The pandemic shut down businesses,
impacted our everyday routines and took the lives of millions. We saw shortages on
items like toilet paper and cleaning supplies. But what was “normal” in our lives has
changed. But we also saw some positive impacts – like families spending more time
together and people washing their hands for 20 seconds! How we live life will be
changed forever.
For the most part, I’d like to think that I’m a positive and optimistic person. So, I’d
like to call our new way of life as “Back to Better”. If I think of some of the changes
that TCoL has made, I’d say it’s better than pre-COVID. TCoL now has a YouTube
channel! We offer classes in-person and virtually and even have videos of activities
on our website. We’ve thought “out of the box” to bring unique events like Parking
Lot Bingo! Participants can put money on their account versus paying each
time. We no longer use envelopes to collect money for activities but use Senior
Space to keep track of fees for activities. Participants now preregister for activities,
which helps with set-up and the ability to contact participants if something has
changed with the activity. With the help of many organizations and volunteers TCoL
has a bigger entrance, new offices, and more electrical outlets for our quilters. We
saw so many acts of kindness – like the quilters making masks for TCoL and others.
Most importantly, TCoL has heard from participants, telling us how much they
appreciate the Thompson Center on Lourdes and all the activities and people. I
believe we have become truly grateful for the little things that we took for granted –
like a hug, a smile, seeing a friend.
TCoL will be open 5 days a week in July and we’re Back to Better!

Meet Glenn Erdmann, the lead instructor for stained glass and fused
glass. Glenn moved to Appleton from Manitowoc 55 years ago. He and Lois recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They have chil-
dren and grandchildren living in Appleton, Hortonville and Tucson, AZ. The “snowbirds” spend the winter months in Green Valley, AZ, a
southern suburb of Tucson.
Glenn has two associates degrees in accounting and computers and is retired from Thrivent. Some of his interests are playing golf, sheeps-head, other card games, traveling and gardening, especially growing
hosta plants. He learned stained glass construction 30 years ago by taking classes at FVTC and now teaches four types of stained glass—foiled, mosaic, fused/slumped and lead came construction. The
enjoyment he gets from seeing students learn the art/craft and seeing their beautiful, finished pieces has had him teaching in Appleton at TCoL, YMCA, many senior living residences and the RV Resort
Park in AZ for over 12 years. Glenn is very proud to have assisted almost 400 students a year mak-ing fused glass Christian crosses at Christian grade schools and churches as far as Brillion and New
London and also in AZ.
Thank you, Glenn, for your dedication to helping so many learn this fulfilling craft.
