Here we are, one week outfrom IowaIllinois SafetyCouncil's 60th ProfessionalDevelopment Conference &Expo! The IISC board andstaff set a path to provide theIISC membership with theBEST safety, health, andenvironmental (SHE)conference & expo availableto SHE professionals inIllinois and Iowa and lookingat the registrations as of thisdate YOU NOTICED!! For those attending this60th annual IISCconference, you willexperience:

The added environmental and workers' compensationtracks to the agenda; The unveiling of the Bill Dickenson Scholarshipsponsoring students to attend the conference to learnmore about a safety, health and environmental careerpath and to network with the best of the best YOU,THE IISC MEMBERSHIP;The new expo event attractions; And the 2nd year adding educational valuewith Wednesday's high quality technical sessions:

Featuring 4hour sessions from keynotespeakers, Richard Hawk and Larry Wilson (withGary Higbee on Wednesday) and an 8hour"Scaffolding Competent Person (Inspection)Training Course", presented by John Palmer, with the Scaffold Training Institute.

An additional perk to IISC's conference is that both theboard and staff realize it may be impossible to attend all thesessions you would like to attend and have tried to remedythis issue. Many of you have registered two or more fromyour organizations to handle the many sessions available;however, many of you can send only one representative;thus IISC provides handouts from the Thursday and Fridaysessions (if provided by the presenters prior to theconference) on a USB flash drive with your registrationpacket. The entire list of presenters is also provided in theback of the program in your packet so that you can contactpresenters, should you have questions concerning thesessions. Educational value, this is what you look to IISC toprovide and this is what the IISC board and staff willcontinue to expand on. I look forward to seeing many of you next week!

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Each April, the National Safety Council promotes Distracted Driving Awareness Month andencourages the public to drive cell free. An estimated one in four crashes involves drivers usingcell phones. Those interested in getting involved in this issue can take the NSC pledge to drivecell free and share the downloadable materials availableat nsc.org/ddmonth. This year's theme What were you thinking? focuses on educating the public on the distractionto the brain from a cell phone conversation while driving, whether handheld or handsfree.Distracted Driving Awareness Month materials include:

"Many drivers have a false sense of security that handsfree devices make cell phone use whiledriving safe," said Janet Froetscher, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. "Morethan 30 research studies show handsfree devices provide no safety benefit as the distraction tothe brain remains. We hope people will take time this April to help spread this importantmessage so needless tragedies can be prevented." April also is a perfect time for employers to begin implementing total bans on cell phone usewhile driving for all employees. NSC developed its free Cell Phone Policy Kit to help employersinterested in implementing or enhancing a policy. National Distracted Driving Awareness Month was introduced as a resolution by former Rep.Betsy Markey (DCO) and passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in a 4102 vote on March23, 2010. The resolution mentions 9yearold Erica Forney, who was struck and killed by adistracted driver in Fort Collins, CO, in November 2008. Erica's mother, Shelley Forney, is afounding board member of FocusDriven Advocates for CellFree Driving. Visit nsc.org/ddmonth throughout the month of April for additional materials. NSC also wouldlike to thank FirstGroup for being a sponsor of Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Back to Top
