Thank you for our dedicated office space!

14 | The Thompson Center on Lourdes

In early 2016, older adults in the Appleton area learned that the senior center they had counted on for years was abruptly closing its doors. As a result, a grassroots group of concerned citizens quickly got together with community leaders, businesses, and others to find a solution. The re-sult was that this group formed, organized, and opened a new corporation known as the Thompson Center on Lourdes. Initially, the priority was to have the doors at the TCoL open as soon as possible so that valued activities and services could be provided to meet the needs of older adults. No funds were avail-able to renovate the building to create offices for staff, and as a result, staff sat out in the recep-tion area. The lack of offices can be extremely difficult when trying to have a confidential conver-sation, being able to hear phone calls, and handling critical tasks. But, we didn’t want to divert available funds to renovate the building since every dollar is needed to keep services going for older adults. In 2020 the dream of having a dedicated office space become reality due to many groups that we would like to recognize: “Frank C. Shattuck Community Fund” within the Community Foundation of the Fox Valley Region Volunteers from the Union Carpenters Local Union 955 donated over 600 hours in labor Kimberly-Clark Corporation donated office furniture A1 Moving and Storage moved the furniture from K-C to the Thompson Center. Werner Electric donated electrical supplies and labor Eland Electric donated data cables and jacks There are so many individual people to thank. One person in particular is Kevin Coleman, who spent endless hours working on the office and widening the main reception door to ensure social distancing safeguards as well as the physical needs and safety of our participants. There’s a saying, it takes a village. TCoL had more than a village – it had a community of caring individuals to make a dream come true. A plaque will be placed outside the office recognizing those above who made the office renovation a possibility. With gratitude, Liz Neuman Executive Director Thompson Center on Lourdes (TCoL) - Celebrating Life After 50

Getting to Know You

20 | The Thompson Center on Lourdes

Marilyn Gebhart relocated to Appleton approximately ten years ago and began volunteering with Civic League at the Thompson Community Center College Avenue location. She assisted with packing many essential items getting ready for the move to the new location at Thompson Center on Lourdes. She continued volunteering with Civic League at TCoL and this has given her a

second place to call home and discover how many things she is capable of doing. Marilyn also participates in many activities such as painting, knitting/crochet and workshops. The various classes provide her with updated information on health care and technology scams and are a great way to meet new people and make friends.

She feels TCoL is essential for our senior community to provide a place to rediscover or contin-ue to do former hobbies. When TCoL closed for three months because of COVID-19, Marilyn missed the activities and socializing. Reopening TCoL gives her the opportunity to reconnect with friends and is a blessing. It continues to provide a vital and essential connection to other seniors.

Marilyn has two children living out of the area. She enjoys cooking, baking, and working on craft projects. Many of the participants at TCoL have become her friends--TCoL is awesome.

Amanda VanSchyndel is very excited to begin her internship at the Thompson Center on Lourdes. She is a second year student at the University of Green Bay working towards her master's degree in Social Work. When she is not working or running errands you will find her outside reading a good book preferably with a cup of hot coffee. She loves listening to people's stories and observing the world. She is looking forward to meeting everyone!

Courtney Osenroth is thrilled to be a part of the Thompson Center on Lourdes as Volunteer and Systems Administrator. She was born, raised, and currently resides in Appleton with her husband, Collin, and 2 children - Theodore (age 4) and Madeline (10 months). She has spent the past 12 years in environmental education and the world of nonprofits. When she is not busy working or chasing kids around, she enjoys hiking, gardening, baking, and going on adventures. She can't wait to meet everyone soon!

My story began last fall by taking a technical class and that put me on the buzz weekly memo list. Due to the COVID isolation, I signed up for a once-a-week phone call and learned my caller was a board member at The Thompson Center on Lourdes. We've become phone friends. A fun summer event was playing bingo in the parking lot, and recently I'm taking the free technology course and participating in the foot clinic. It's wonderful to be with people again. Mary Francis

Security on Social Media

22 | The Thompson Center on Lourdes

Does it seem to you like the older adults in your life struggle to protect their Facebook and oth-er social media accounts from being hacked? You would be correct. Seniors are often the victims of Facebook hacks, for reasons ranging from choosing weak passwords to accepting friend re-quests from scammers.

Older adults are frequent targets for hacking on online platforms other than Facebook, too. Some security experts say this is because seniors are perceived to have greater financial assets, while also lacking the technical skills necessary to protect themselves.

It’s important to raise awareness of this issue, since the number of older adults utilizing social media platforms is climbing. This is especially true of Facebook.

While younger adults are turning away from Facebook, seniors continue to be one of the largest and fastest-growing demographics on the platform. Data from the Pew Research Center shows that 37% of those born before 1945 were on Facebook in 2019, compared to just 21% in 2012. Baby boomers’ usage of Facebook climbed from 43% to 60% in the same time frame.

What are older adults doing that’s putting them at increased risk for an online data breach? Cyber experts cite a few of the common causes and offer advice on how seniors can stay safe.

1. Follow best practices for Facebook security. Along with sending and receiving emails and online shopping, visiting Facebook is one of the most popular cyber activities for seniors. Unfor-tunately, scammers recognize that. If you or a senior in your family is on Facebook, make sure to share “Senior Safety & Facebook: Staying Safe Online” with them. The article discusses the false sense of security older adults often feel on Facebook, and steps everyone can take to protect their privacy.

2. Use strong passwords on all internet devices. Many tablets, phones, and laptops give us-ers the option of disabling password protection. While it might be more convenient not to have to enter a password each time you use the device, it also makes it easier for you to become the victim of a security breach. Remember, a strong password should include at least 12 characters and include a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Also refrain from using personal information, such as a child’s birth date or pet’s name, in the password.

3. Keep apps updated. Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms frequently notify users that an update is available. Often these updates are to improve the appearance of the plat-form, but sometimes they are to fix a security bug or glitch. You can protect yourself by staying on top of each update.

Security on Social Media

Technology – some love it, while others would rather live without it. No matter your opin-ion, technology is critical for any organization. TCoL realized the lack of technology and the impact when COVID surfaced in March.

A big THANK YOU to the David L. and Rita E. Nelson Family Fund within the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region for providing a grant designated for a Business Tech-nology Upgrade!! We are so excited for our future and how technology will make TCoL more effective and efficient! Thank you so much for your support!

4. Install security software.Viruses and malware can sneak into your computer and other devices in a variety of ways. By installing reliable security software on your laptop, you can lower your risk. Also be sure to run the antivirus and antispyware software regularly. Finally, beware of security updates that appear in pop-up ads and emails you receive. Many are actual-ly viruses.

Our final suggestion is to be wary of emails that come from unknown sources or that encour-age you to update financial information or records. They may be from a scammer hoping to steal your personal or financial information. ©LPi
