language problems for workers who care for non- English speaking clients
qualified interpreter is not available / too costlylong waiting time for interpreters
misunderstandings and mistakesfrustration / irritation / / anxiety / anger despair
dependence on family for interpreting
no language tools available
WORKERS have FEELINGS OF BEING POWERLESS, being NEGLECTFUL, FAILING in DUTY of CARE,
wasting precious time, having to cope with “behaviour problems”
www.oyo.net.au yes, you CAN !!!
Communication is the biggest BARRIERin care: what do YOU do?just body language ? why/why not
bi-lingual worker ? why/why not
interpreter ? why/why not
language tool ? why/why not
do the client and the worker get a fair go with the above?
www.oyo.net.au yes, you CAN !!!
legislation states: equal access for all
clients have the legal RIGHT to express themselves and be understood
about physical, emotional, social needs and preferences
NO…..we DON’T treat people equally we provide an EQUAL OUTCOME!!!!
so we do things differently when needed

language kitAlzheimers Association QLD
together with OYO has created a language support kit, which is an informative tool in their
education and support programs about dementiaIt contains language guides, cue cards, games,
signs in multi languages andhelping professionals to determine what they need
philosophy behind the OYO communication system
• is to provide a simple transliteration system
• for basic communication
• to enable transfer of meaningrather than linguistic perfection (in grammar)
• by empowering all stakeholders about choices, consent, daily activities, sharing information in care environment
• provide pictures, English word, foreign word and two-way pronunciation
• presented in a group they belong to groups such as: clinical procedures, medication , daily activities, time, food, dentist, feelings, civilities, hobbies, pain, professionals, family, bodily functions, body parts, directions, daily things, clothing, health aids, transport, danger, health problems, etc
• no previous knowledge of foreign languages required
why pictures ?what we hear is not necessarily what we “see”
we “think” in pictures NOT in spoken language
when we hear a word, we “translate” that sound into a picture.
as long as we know which sounds representwhich picture,we’ll get the meaning.
pictures provide meaning, understanding, pleasure
clients and students will identify the picture with its meaning in one glance: it enhances the learning and remembering process.
using multiple wordsyou can just communicate one word (e.g. “breakfast” ! (page 73)
or a small sentencee.g." you” (page 2) “want” (page 2) “to sleep” (page 23) (or simplify with “sleep?”
“please” (back-cover) I (page 1), blood pressure (page 36) (or simplify with blood pressure? pointing from myself to client

questions ?in all languages one can ask a question simply by:
- saying the word and let pitch go up at end of word and/or
- raise eyebrows
- so:coffee? soap? pain? later? toilet?
