TARZAN’S ZIP CODEWhere were those amazing adventures supposed to have taken place?

AFRICA – A VAST CONTINENT WITH DESERTS, VELDT, RIVER FLOODPLAINS AND SOME “JUNGLE”

GOOGLE EARTH AFFORDS STREET VIEWS OF SOUTH AFRICA, SWAZILAND, BOTSWANA AND NAMIBIA FROM THE ROADSIDES AND STREETS OF THESE COUNTRIES. NONE ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FROM WEST AFRICA,

BUT GOOGLE IS WORKING ON IT.

Near De Rust, Z. A., about 70 miles from the ocean.

The Shoprite Store in KwaZulu, Natal, Z. A.

Gauteng, Near Pretoria, Z. A., boasts imported conifers.

EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS MADE A FORTUNE FROM TARZAN… THOUGH HE NEVER VISITED AFRICA.

HIS AFRICA IS A WORLD FILLED WITH IMAGINARY TRIBES, THE IMAGINARY “GREAT APES” AND IMAGINARY MOUNTAIN RANGES.

ONCE IN A WHILE HE DREAMED UP PLACES SIMILAR TO REAL PLACES LIKE THE ITIGI-SUMBU THICKET, TO BE DISCUSSED.

TARZAN WAS BORN IN A CABIN TEN DEGREES SOUTH OF THE EQUATOR (ANGOLA) AND NEAR A BEACH ON THE WEST

AFRICAN COAST. WHEN GROWN HE MEETS LIEUTENANT PAUL D’ARNOT WHO HELPS RESCUE JANE PORTER AND HER FATHER AS WELL AS ONE OF TARZAN’S RELATIVES. D’ARNOT BECOMES

TARZAN’S FIRM ALLY THROUGHOUT MANY TARZAN NOVELS.

Tarzan of the Apes and Greystoke: the Legend of Tarzan are the two most faithful Tarzan films to date.

Christopher Lambert as the adult Tarzan in Greystoke

Tarzan and Jane marry and raise a son, also named John, in England. He becomes enamored of jungle life and apes anyway!

BURROUGHS GOT INVOLVED IN MOVIE PRODUCTION.

FAIRLY FAITHFUL TO THE NOVEL OF THE SAME NAME WAS “TARZAN AND THE GOLDEN LION” PRODUCED BY EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS HIMSELF AND RELEASED THROUGH ROBERTSON-COLE PICTURES CORPORATION.

FRANK MERRILL WAS THE FIRST “TALKING” TARZAN. HE STARRED IN TWO SERIALS FOR

UNIVERSAL.

This isn’t Jane, and the boy is not “Boy”, but “Bobby”.

Tarzan the Mighty is apparently lost, but a good print of Tarzan the Tiger survives.

MOST FILM FANS REMEMBER JOHNNY WEISSMULLER AS THE ONLY TARZAN. BUSTER CRABBE, LEX BARKER, RON ELY, GORDON SCOTT AND MANY OTHERS HAVE PORTRAYED THE JUNGLE LORD VERY ADMIRABLY, THOUGH THE PUBLIC RECALLS WEISMULLER BEST DUE TO HIS TEN YEARS AS TARZAN.

TARZAN AND HIS MATE WAS THE MOST EXPENSIVE MGM TARZAN PICTURE

Tarzan's utterances usually consisted of simple sentences and yells when sound films first came along

This weekend’s guest, Tommy Cook, is in this RKO Tarzan feature!

GORDON SCOTT WAS TARZAN FOR SY WEINTRAUB’S TARZAN FILMS OF THE EARLY SIXTIES.. IN DEBBIE’S OPINION, A FINE ACTOR AND THE

EMBODIMENT OF THE TARZAN OF THE NOVELS. HIS FILMS WERE ACTUALLY FILMED IN KENYA, THEN KNOWN AS BRITISH EAST AFRICA

Despite Burroughs never visiting Africa, his Pal-ul-Don of Tarzan the Terrible is remarkably similar to a real place.

City of A-lur, the Hodon capital of Pal-ul-don. There are two races of Pithecanthropi civilizing this lost land. Pal-ul-don also boasts a survivor from the ceratopsian dinosaur family called a “gryf”

Burroughs described it as many miles in diameter and isolated from the outside world by a very dense thicket

THE ITIGI-SUMBU THICKET IS NEAR LAKE MWERU WANTIPA & LAKE TANGANYIKA. IT IS HOME TO TWO UNIQUE REPTILES, THE BEAKED SNAKE AND THE FOUR FINGERED SKINK. NO GRYFS, THOUGH… SORRY.

Pithecanthropus “shes” like Pan-at-lee were pretty, weren’t they? Oh, and to burst everyone’s bubble, since they were hominids, the real Pithecanthropus (Homo erectus) males and females did not have tails.

An ape and his gryf menace Pan-at-lee and the Lord of the Jungle in Tarzan the Terrible.

OPAR WAS DISCOVERED TO BE A CULTURE AND EMPIRE IN DECAY…. THE MEN WERE STRANGE HYBRIDS OF HUMANS AND GREAT APES

BUT THE WOMEN WERE EXCEPTIONALLY BEAUTIFUL AND FULLY HUMAN. WHAT A TOURIST ATTRACTION THIS WOULD BE IF REAL!

Tarzan and the Ant Men (1923).

The Ant Men’s kingdom from what we can tell is in Ethiopia, along with Midian, a lost empire of Christians all struggling with epilepsy (Tarzan Triumphant, 1931) and the lost cities of Nimmr and Alemtejo (Tarzan the Magnificent, 1936).

CASTRUM SANGUINARIUS AND CASTRUM MARE OF THE NOVELS WERE ISOLATED ROMAN CITIES HIDDEN IN THE WRIRAMWAZI MOUNTAINS OF AFRICA… AND YOUR GUESS IS AS GOOD AS MINE AS TO WHERE THESE MOUNTAINS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE.

The fab sixties brought the jetsetter Tarzan on screen. Still the indisputable Lord of the Jungle!

Mike Henry

Jock Mahoney as Tarzan, Tarzan’s Three Challenges

Ron Ely (Tarzan) and Manuel Padilla, Jr. (Jai) live near the fictional African town of Kenbasi. It’s a short swing by vines to Jai’s school which is near the shores of an ocean or sea. There’s also some volcanic activity nearby.

Newer films include 1984’s Greystoke , filmed in

Cameroon, and 1998’s Tarzan and the Lost City (supposedly

Opar but bearing no real resemblance).

IF YOU WANT TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN WRITING, DO AS ERB ADVISED:

" Get the habit of work and quit being an "inspirational" author -- which is merely another name for a loafer. Don't wait for ideas to come. Go after them. Don't write every now and then. Write every day, if only for a little while. Be a worker, not a poseur. The only real "literary people" are those who work at it. Those who make good are the ones who keep so busy that they have no time to show off. "
