LastNovember,Ihadtheopportunitytoattendmyfirstprofessionalconferenceandpresentmyunder-graduateresearchattheGeologicalSocietyofAmerica’sAnnualMeetinginCharlotte,NC.ThiswasoneofthefewexperiencesI’vehadinmyyounggeosciencecareerthatmademefeellikeIwastrulyapartofaglobalcommunityofscientists,anditleftmeexcitedformyeducationandcareerprospectsinupcom-ingyears.ThepostersessionIparticipatedinbroughtmeintocontactwithscientistsyoungandoldwithadviceandcriticismthatgreatlycontributedtomydevelopmentandconfidenceasaresearcher.However,myparticipationinthemeetingwouldnothavebeenpossiblewithoutTheFriendsofOrtonHallFund,whichsupportedmytravelandregistrationfees,lodging,andfoodforthefour-daytrip.ThroughoutmyundergraduatecareerintheSchoolofEarthSciences,Ihavebeenblessedwithmanyopportunitiesandexperiencesthatstudentsinotherdepartmentsoftenneverreceive,duesignificantlytofundslikethoseofTheFriendsofOrtonHall.

Workshop for teachers promotes geoscience careersSixteenlocalareahighschoolteachersattendedaweek-longworkshopledbyJasonCervenec,atByrdPolarResearchCenter,andProfMichaelDurandofSES.Theworkshopgaveteachersinstructionandtoolsforahy-drologymoduleintheirclassrooms.Teachersperformedhands-onexperimentsandmeasurementsofprecipita-tion,infiltration,runoff,andsoilmoisture.Aprofessionalpanel,includingSESalumnusPeterMacKenzie(B.S.1994)discussedgeosciencecareerswiththeteachers.TherewasafieldtriptotheBattelleDarbyCreekMetroPark(http://www.metroparks.net/parksbattelledarbycreek.aspx),learnedthebasicsofstreambiology,andmadeastreamflowmeasurement.Finally,teacherstookaguidedtouroftheOlentangyRiver5thAvedamremoval,andlearnedaboutthebeneficialaffectsonriverbiologyandfloodmanagement,aswellasfutureriverdevelopmentplans.ThegoaloftheNSF-sponsoredprojectistodeveloptoolstopromotegeosciencecareersinclassrooms.

Prof Krissek joins IODP advisory committeeProfLarryKrissekhasacceptedaninvitationtoservea3-yeartermasamemberoftheU.S.AdvisoryCommit-teeforScientificOceanDrilling(USAC),thenationaladvisorycommitteeforU.S.participationintheInterna-tionalOceanDiscoveryProgram(IODP).ThetermstartsinOctober2013.
