SURE Final Poster SessionThetenundergraduatemajorsinEarthSciencesparticipatinginthe2013ShellUndergraduateResearchEx-periencepresentedtheirresearchresultsatafinalpostersessiononThursday,July25.Overthethreehoursofthepostersession,dozensofstudents,faculty,andstaffvisitedandtalkedwiththestudentsabouttheirresearch.AmongtheattendeeswereExecutiveDeanofArtsandSciencesDavidManderscheid,associateviceprovostforresearchadministrationJanWeisenberger,andEarthSciencesalumnusandShellgeoscientist,TedGodo.Pictured(lefttoright)areJoeLonsert,ChristianGomes,MichaelKellum,AmyWiley,MackenzieScharenberg,ChristinaZerda,AmberHuston,HaroldElston,MarioGutierrez,DanielArdrey,AnneCarey,andTedGodo.

Alumni change lives Kelsey Dailey (B.S. with Research Distinction, 2013) received support from the Friends of Orton Hall fund, which is sustained by alumni contributions. Here, Kelsey describes how FoH helped advance her career and enrich her academic experience.
LastNovember,Ihadtheopportunitytoattendmyfirstprofessionalconferenceandpresentmyunder-graduateresearchattheGeologicalSocietyofAmerica’sAnnualMeetinginCharlotte,NC.ThiswasoneofthefewexperiencesI’vehadinmyyounggeosciencecareerthatmademefeellikeIwastrulyapartofaglobalcommunityofscientists,anditleftmeexcitedformyeducationandcareerprospectsinupcom-ingyears.ThepostersessionIparticipatedinbroughtmeintocontactwithscientistsyoungandoldwithadviceandcriticismthatgreatlycontributedtomydevelopmentandconfidenceasaresearcher.However,myparticipationinthemeetingwouldnothavebeenpossiblewithoutTheFriendsofOrtonHallFund,whichsupportedmytravelandregistrationfees,lodging,andfoodforthefour-daytrip.ThroughoutmyundergraduatecareerintheSchoolofEarthSciences,Ihavebeenblessedwithmanyopportunitiesandexperiencesthatstudentsinotherdepartmentsoftenneverreceive,duesignificantlytofundslikethoseofTheFriendsofOrtonHall.
Workshop for teachers promotes geoscience careersSixteenlocalareahighschoolteachersattendedaweek-longworkshopledbyJasonCervenec,atByrdPolarResearchCenter,andProfMichaelDurandofSES.Theworkshopgaveteachersinstructionandtoolsforahy-drologymoduleintheirclassrooms.Teachersperformedhands-onexperimentsandmeasurementsofprecipita-tion,infiltration,runoff,andsoilmoisture.Aprofessionalpanel,includingSESalumnusPeterMacKenzie(B.S.1994)discussedgeosciencecareerswiththeteachers.TherewasafieldtriptotheBattelleDarbyCreekMetroPark(http://www.metroparks.net/parksbattelledarbycreek.aspx),learnedthebasicsofstreambiology,andmadeastreamflowmeasurement.Finally,teacherstookaguidedtouroftheOlentangyRiver5thAvedamremoval,andlearnedaboutthebeneficialaffectsonriverbiologyandfloodmanagement,aswellasfutureriverdevelopmentplans.ThegoaloftheNSF-sponsoredprojectistodeveloptoolstopromotegeosciencecareersinclassrooms.

Prof Krissek joins IODP advisory committeeProfLarryKrissekhasacceptedaninvitationtoservea3-yeartermasamemberoftheU.S.AdvisoryCommit-teeforScientificOceanDrilling(USAC),thenationaladvisorycommitteeforU.S.participationintheInterna-tionalOceanDiscoveryProgram(IODP).ThetermstartsinOctober2013.
