II Welcome
The Subaru Brand
What makes a Subaru, a Subaru?
A company’s brand is its most important asset. A brand is a leadership tool. It is a unique identity of your com-pany and your business perspective. A brand defines your business, products and services you offer. It is a guarantee of quality. Your brand helps your business establish a relationship with customers and define your position in the market. The brand makes a promise to customers and key stakeholders that must be delivered at every touchpoint.
Brand identity is key to communicating the brand promise and is often the biggest investment into the success of a company. The consistent presentation of the brand and its related promise, when applied to advertising, literature, corporate collateral, presentations and websites, helps to connect our brand to our consumers. This is executed in many ways, especially through the presentation of corporate logos and the use of a recognizable creative style. The goal is to provide consistency to enable our audiences to easily and clearly recognize who we are and what we stand for.
The Subaru Philosophy is to create customer excitement for what makes Subaru a smart and distinctive auto-motive brand - “What Makes a Subaru, a Subaru?” Our communications should reflect our brand image of fun, freedom, adventure, confidence and control. Along the way, we create passion and excitement that translates into lasting customer relationships and positions the Subaru brand for long-term success.
III The Subaru Brand
History of the Subaru Star Cluster Logo
When Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (F.H.I.) entered the automobile industry in 1958, it established Subaru as its exclusive automobile brand. Since then, the Six Stars Symbol and SUBARU logo have supported several generations of Subaru cars. “Subaru” is the Japanese name for Pleiades, a prominent cluster of stars in the constellation Taurus. The easily-recognized Pleiades cluster can be seen clearly in Japan’s winter skies to the right of Orion. As a result, Pleiades has served as a trusty guide for ancient travelers around the world throughout the ages.
The Star Cluster graphic is the symbol of the Subaru brand and when used in combination with the SUBARU logo type, it is the most important brand identity symbol. The design symbolizes the six brightest “Subaru stars” of the Pleiades cluster enclosed in an ellipse, indicating that it is just one part of the cluster.
The SUBARU logo type expresses the brand name and is used in combination with the Star Cluster graphic (excluding certain exceptions approved by F.H.I.) .
Global Brand Statement - Confidence in Motion
Confidence in Motion is the global brand statement for Fuji Heavy Industries (F.H.I.). “Confidence” is a measure of trust and sure-footed reliability which reflects FHI’s commitment to engineering excellence which inspires Subaru customers. By putting that confidence “in Motion,” FHI declares to move with the times and anticipate customer expectations.
Starting in 2012 MY, “Confidence in Motion” (CIM) will be incorporated below the Subaru logo in Marketing Communications. While the written words “Confidence in Motion” will be added below the Subaru logo, it is not planned to dilute the essence of the Love campaign. “Love.” and “Its what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.” is planned to continue in both written and verbal communication..
Refer to the CIM logos and the Logo Usage Recommendations pages at the end of Section A for guidance.

The Subaru Campaign
Love continues to define the Subaru marketing campaign. The overall look and feel of the brand element will be applied to all marketing mate-rials for the current model year. The campaign elements consist of the photographic style of the vehicle, the cigar band, Subaru brand logo (or CIM logo), compliant fonts and a strategic message appropriate for the model(s) featured for a consistent brand message.
Subaru continues to promote overall brand awareness, individual prod-ucts and support the consumers experience through real owner com-munication. The tag line “Love. it’s what makes a Subaru a Subaru.” continues to be applied on the national level and on supporting materials where appropriate.
For further details on any of these areas, authorized employees or agencies employed by Subaru may contact the Marketing Department to obtain current confidential brand book, Campaign evolution and brand & Carline messaging guide to be used as guidance for print and online executions for all touch-points to stay on brand.
Current MY print advertising is a helpful resource as each one reflects photographic style, brand attitude/tone, brand tenants, safety messaging and core values. It is imperative that each of these areas are included and work together in print materials so as to not dilute the impact of the campaign.
The pages that follow details the design elements required to be used as a guideline for all print executions.
Section D: Style Overview / Subaru Campaign
Campaign elements
A photograph featuring the current MY vehicle is the primary feature of the ad. The white or gray band graphic is used to ground the text and Subaru brand logo in a consistent position suitable for most print executions.
Cigar Band FormulaThe cigar band height is equal to or less than 1/9” of overall page height (divide the page height by 9 to determine the maximum band height.) Position the band in the bottom 8th grid position which has equal space below allowing the image to bleed off the bottom of the page. Do not place band in bottom 1/9th of page. See example for font and size of text within the band.
NOTE: There is no longer a small gap between the bands. The left and right sides butt together to create one band.
Band ColorsWhite - The left side of the band is 100% white with an 85% transparency. The right side is 100% solid white. Use on a col-ored or photograph background.Gray - The left side of the band is 20% black (no transparency). The right side is 8-10% black. Use a gray band ONLY on a solid white background.
Brand LogoA four color Subaru Confidence in Motion (CIM) brand logo is centered and positioned in the right band. Minimum isolation area rule applies.
TextRefer to the specification on the next page for font style, size, weight and placement.
ImageThe image behind the band bleeds off all sides of the page. Model / Subaru.com / Price Call-outsPosition text below the cigar band and align flush left with the text above. See example for font and size.
Disclaimer(s)Position at the most bottom part of the page just above the page margin. See example for font and size.
Section D: Style Overview / Campaign Elements
Page grid - divide page height by 9 to determine band height. Place band in 8th grid position. On a double page spread the band extends across both pages.

Subaru Cim broadcast Logos
The four color horizontal Broadcast Confidence in Motion logo is the primary required logo form. The black and white CIM logo is the secondary recommendation. Use these logos on all broadcast executions.
The visual difference between the broadcast CIM logo and the print CIM logo is that the text is smaller and in 90% black rather than 60% black.
Refer to the screen position exmaple for logo placement based on a 1920 x 1080 pixel size screen.
Refer to Section D, Style Overview, Marketing Examples pages of this manual for broadcast examples.

Car decal designs (also refered to as wraps) should follow the Subaru Logo and Affiliate Sub-Logos sections of this manual. Subaru provides vehicles to its affiliations, often at no cost, in order to co-promote the organization as well as the Subaru brand. The rules explained in this section should be applied when designing for all vehicle graphics requests.
Magnets
Vehicle magnets are a quick and cost efficient alternative to vehicle wraps. Magnet templates are available for the current year models, sizes vary de-pending on model. Contact the Creative Services Department (CS) to have vehicle magnets customized for your affiliate or event.
the creative Services Department (cS) is available to customize Subaru vehicle wraps as well as provide your affiliation or agency with the Illustra-tor .eps templates if required. ALL vehicle wraps designs MUST BE sub-mitted to the CS Dept. for compliancy approval PRIOR to printing. The CS Dept. can also assist with print estimate (based on approved artwork), as well as sourcing a printer and/or an installer available anywhere in the continental U.S.

co-BrandingThe affiliate logo must never overpower the Subaru logo. The logos should either be equal in size or the affiliate logo may be smaller. Refer to the Subaru Logos and Sub-Logos sections of the Brand Identity Manual (BI) for suggested placement and isolation space surrounding the logos.
Subaru logo & FontsFeature an approved Subaru logo on two to four sides of the vehicle when pos-sible. If only 2 sides of the vehicle are being designed then a Subaru brand logo must be on both sides. The design should allow for a 4 color brand logo when possible on a solid background color. If there is no solid white space for the Subaru 4 color logo then a flat black or white logo is recommended. Avoid plac-ing the logo on busy backgrounds that may make it difficult to read. Use of spe-cial effects on the logo such as drop shadows or glows are strictly prohibited as mentioned in Section A of this manual.
Sponsorship VerbiageUse the words “Official Vehicle”, “Proud Sponsor” or “Proud Partner” in a brand compliant font with a Subaru logo beside or below it (appropriate verbiage may vary per contract). Refer to the approved fonts section of this manual.
Subaru.comThe Subaru web address “subaru.com” should be incorporated somewhere on the design. Typically it has been positioned on the lower side door panels or rear bumper. Dropping the ‘www.’ portion of the web address is encouraged as it is already implied.
Windshield headersHeaders may be used on the front and rear windshields and are another way of incorporating a Subaru logo, message or website. A solid white background is recommended with the an approved Subaru logo or relevant information to that particular model or event.
Vehicle BadgingAll badging and lights MUST be cut out of the decal at time of install. Design-ers should consider the sheet metal details, door handles, door seams, mirrors, windows and gas cap access when developing a wrap. Vehicle graphics may not match exactly when flipped to the opposite side, designer should account for both sides as well as consider the vehicle color as part of the overall design. Bumpers are often not an ideal area to wrap because it is not made of sheet metal and the materials cannot be guaranteed to stick for a long duration of time.

national Sales Events
This custom vehicle wrap was designed to support the annual De-cember Share the Love Event and has been displayed at various auto shows. The event logo is featured prominently on the sides of the vehicle.
Regional Support of corporate Sponsorship
The ASPCA is an affiliate sponsored by Subaru. In addition to the Love A Pet wrap, Subaru produced similar wrap designs for five ASPCA af-filiate locations around the country. The ASPCA, local affiliate and the Subaru logos are featured prominently on the design.
affiliate Sponsorship
The co-branded design features both the affiliate and Subaru logos at the same size.
affiliate Sponsorship Event
Special events often require customized promotional wraps. It is important to brand the event and event details as well as co-brand both the affiliate logo and Subaru logos.
Section E: Vehicle Graphics / Wrap Elements
Customized wrap includes the local affiliate logo, contact information and web address. This can create unity if using for multiple related affiliations.

This system pro-vides supplemental protection only, and seatbelts must be worn in order to avoid injuries to out-of-position occupants upon bag deployment and to provide the best combined protection in a serious accident. Children should always be properly restrained in one of the rear seats. See Owner‘s Manual for recommended seating position.
