THERE’S STILL TIME TO HOST A FRESH AIR CHILD IN ALBANY AREACAPITAL DISTRICT - June 30th, 2014 marked the beginning of Fresh Air summer experiences for thousands of inner-city children and their volunteer host families as The Fresh Air Fund kicked off its 138th summer of serving New York City children. By volunteering as a host family in Albany Area, NY, you can share the pure joys of summer with a Fresh Air child in your own backyard! The Fresh Air Fund is currently seeking more families to give inner-city children a Fresh Air experi-ence this summer. Fresh Air summers are filled with children running barefoot through the grass, gazing at star-filled skies or swimming for the first time. Each summer, over 4,000 in-ner-city children visit suburban, rural and small town com-munities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 mil-lion New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from six to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children on first-time vis-its are six to 12 years old and stay for one or two weeks. Chil-dren who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. Over 65 percent of all children are reinvited to stay with
their host families, year after year. For more information on hosting a Fresh Air child, please contact Tenniel Han-sen at 518-441-4407 or visit The Fresh Air Fund online at www.freshair.org.

It would seem that no gardening task could be easier than watering. While that’s true, there are right and wrong ways to water to keep your plants healthy and conserve water.
Let’s start with the lawn. Traditional wisdom tells us that, for a lawn to remain healthy, it needs an inch of water a week. What you need to know though, is that the lawn needs that inch all at one time to get any real benefi t from it. This means that you should be watering your lawn heavily then not at all for a week or so. With a limited amount of water available to most of us, we have the tendency to try and move the sprinkler around the yard to make sure that we get the whole lawn watered at one time without any regard to whether it is getting enough water for more than temporary relief. I’d like to suggest a different way. If you have watering restrictions that only allow you to water every other day for two hours, let your lawn sprinkler soak one area for the full two hours. When your next watering opportunity arrives, move the lawn sprinkler to the next section and soak it with at least an inch of water. Folks with underground sprinkling systems need to follow the same advice. Often these systems can be programmed to water different zones so they set them up to water each zone every day. Instead, set them up to soak one zone each day with an inch of water then do a different zone the next day. The reason for all this is to take the best advantage of the limited water we have. By putting an inch of water on the lawn, you’ll be soaking the soil to a depth of 6”. Water at this depth in the soil will not evaporate quickly and is where the roots of the grass are so it can be absorbed. Quickly spraying the lawn might perk it up briefl y but most of that moisture is lost to evaporation and can never penetrate deep into the soil to get to the roots of the lawn. At this point folks will ask me, “How long do I need to leave the sprinkler on to put on an inch of water?” Since we all have different lawn sprinklers and water pressure, I can’t answer that question. This is something we must all determine on our own. You can get a rain gauge and leave it out there until it has an inch of water in it. There’s no need to buy a rain gauge though (but they are handy). You simply need to take a small, empty tuna fi sh can and place it in the area you’re watering and don’t shut it off until it is full. Make a mental note of how long it took and you’ll always know how long your setup takes to put out an inch of water. That’s it. Water deeply then take a break for a week.
In our fl ower and vegetable garden the same basic logic holds true with one MAJOR differ-ence. We NEVER want to use a lawn sprinkler in our fl ower and vegetable gardens. Spray-ing our garden plants with water washes away pollen (no pollen, no vegetables) and greatly decreases the time a fl ower lasts in our fl owerbeds. Spraying also chills the leaves shocking the plant and creates the perfect conditions for diseases to take hold. How do we water the gardens without wetting the plants? Use a watering wand. A watering wand allows you to direct the water onto the soil at the base of each plant so the roots can be soaked without wet-ting the foliage. The wand gets the water where it’s most needed without wasting any. If you haven’t the time or patience for wand watering, you can install oozing soaker hoses under the mulch so all you have to do is hook up your hose and walk away. If you are using several soaker hoses in different beds, you may want to invest in snap connectors and an inexpensive water timer/shut off so you can let it run while you leave for work.
Naturally a 4” layer of mulch in your fl owerbeds will make sure that your precious water doesn’t evaporate away. Mulch keeps the soil cool and moist a lot longer and really cuts down on watering and weeding. One note of caution: Don’t pile the mulch up around the stems of your garden plants including shrubs and trees. The stems and bark MUST be ex-posed to air for moisture and nutrients to fl ow unimpeded from the roots to the leaves above. I know you ‘re all seeing mulch piled up volcano-like around trees in the area but, trust me; those trees are suffering and will likely die in a few years. It seems cozy to nestle that mulch up around the stems of your plants but believe me, your plants will thrive if you keep the mulch away from the stems. Thanks for the read.

(NAPS)—Many drivers fi nd that if they want to make their car last, it pays to put it fi rst. Taking good care of your car means you are more likely to avoid problems, both now, while you’re driving it, and later, when you sell it.
To improve the life of your vehicle and its price at resale, it’s a good idea to get it ser-viced regularly. The car will not only run better, it will be highlighted on a Carfax Re-port as a “well maintained” vehicle. Keep track of the service history so you can prove you did the right thing to prospective buyers.
To help, you can get remind-ers about upcoming service from the free myCarfax mo-bile app. Subscribers also learn of any open recalls on their cars.
MAINTENANCE PAYS
A CAR’S WIPERS NEED CARE TO KEEP THINGS CLEAR
(NAPS)—Windshield wip-ers may be among the most overworked and underap-preciated equipment on your car.For example, while drivers depend on their wipers for visibility in rain, sleet and snow, many don’t pay at-tention to them until they can’t see clearly out of the windshield. As a result, say experts, they end up endan-gering their own safety as well as that of fellow travel-ers.“Windshield wipers take a beating—not just because of normal use, but also extreme temperatures, ultraviolet light, car waxes, tree sap, road tar and even pollutants,” says wiper specialist Chris Ver-mette. A good rule of thumb is to replace blades at least yearly, or as soon as you notice a streak, skip or smear. It’s an easy do-it-yourself proj-ect, but damaged wiper arms and motors may need professional attention.
Signs Of WearThe most common signs and causes of worn wiper blades include:• Streaking: The rubber squeegee dries, hardens and cracks, or there is debris on the windshield.• Skipping: The blade develops a curvature from damage or lack of use.• Wearing: Excessive use and rounded—not squared—rubber edges.
• Splitting: Rubber deteriorates and sepa-rates from the frame because of sun and sol-vent damage.
Tips On Preserving Blades
While no wiper blade lasts forever, ACDelco Professional Service Center Program tech-nicians recommend these tips to prolong blade life and preserve your visibility:
• Clean your windshield at every fi ll-up.
• Wipe the rubber blade with a damp paper towel to remove loose dirt.
• Never use windshield wipers to remove ice from your windshield. The stress can dam-age the blade as well as the motor. Use an ice scraper or defroster.
• In the winter, pull up wipers to prevent the squeegee from icing and sticking to the glass.
• Use a quality washer solvent; cheap ones are full of alcohol, which dries the rubber.

GPS IS NOT FOOLPROOF. A MAP STILL
MAKES THE MOST
OF SUMMER TRAVEL
(NewsUSA) - It’s the sea-son of sunshine and road trips -- and if you want to get the most out of your four-wheeled adventure, you bet-ter pack a map to go along with that electronic GPS.
“The best reason to keep paper maps in your vehicle, especially on long road trips, is because GPS isn’t always reliable,” says Cynthia Ochter-beck, editorial director of Michelin Travel Partner.
Confi rming this trend, a 2013 Harris Interactive sur-vey of 2,200 U.S. drivers who use GPS found that 63 per-cent say that the technology has led them astray at least once by pointing them in the wrong direction or creat-ing complex, confusing and incorrect routes.
So, while it may seem that paper maps have gone the way of Atari’s Pong, they are still just as important as ever -- not to men-tion many other benefi ts that you don’t get with some GPS devices.
“One of the greatest characteristics of p per maps is that you get all of the details, [such as] points of interest,” says Ochterbeck. “Plus, you don’t risk getting lost when you lose the signal or the battery dies on your cell phone or GPS device.”
Another benefi t is that, in addition to printed maps providing effi cient ways of understand-ing road networks that surround particular areas, the information is very reliable. Plus, new specialized maps, like Michelin’s Zoom Maps, are aiming to enhance the paper map experience.
Most people recognize Michelin for its tires, but, unknown to many, it also has a 112-year
history of creating maps and travel guides. In fact, it provided the maps that were used by the Allies for the D-Day invasion. Improv-ing on this history, the new Zoom Maps of-fer seven regional maps for travel in the U.S., with the ability to zoom in on more detail in urban areas. In addition, the new maps have a “not-to-be-missed” event calendar for re-gions, in an easy-to-fold system so you don’t have to unfold the entire map.
“Technology is great, but a printed map is one of the most important tools a traveler in an unfamiliar setting can have -- the battery doesn’t die, it is easy to use, and it allows you to make deci-sions on route changes if necessary,” says Ochterbeck. “Even better, there are no roaming or data charges to worry about.”
