A Prayer To
Our Lady of the Rosary O Virgin Mary, grant that the recitation of thy Rosary may be for me each day, in the midst of my manifold duties, a bond of unity in my actions, a tribute of filial piety, a sweet refreshment, an encouragement to walk joyfully along the path of duty. Grant, above all, O Virgin Mary, that the study of thy mysteries may form in my soul, little by little, a luminous atmosphere, pure, strengthening, and fragrant, which may penetrate my understanding, my will, my heart, my memory, my imagination, my whole being. So shall I acquire the habit of praying while I work, without the aid of formal prayers, by interior acts of admiration and of supplication, or by aspirations of love. I ask this of thee, O Queen of the Holy Rosary, through Saint Dominic, thy son of predilection, the renowned preacher of thy mysteries, and the faithful imitator of thy virtues. Amen.

Dear Friends,
Over the next several weeks, I will be happy to share with you some
reflections from members of our parish who were able to be a part of the World
Meeting of Families, as well as the events of the Papal weekend of September
26-27th.
I am sure you agree with me that the visit of Pope Francis brought an extraordinary energy and
excitement to our city and a much-needed boost to the Church of Philadelphia.
For those who were not able to join in these wonderful events in the life of our Church, I hope the
reflections of our parishioners will help you sense the excitement that some of us were able to experience
in person.
Through the intercession of Saint Augustine and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, may we always be United in
the Sacred Heart of Jesus! Fr. O’Sullivan
PS. Any parishioners who were present at any of the Papal events are welcome to write a short reflection of your
participation in the event(s) and email or drop it off it to the rectory. It will be included in future bulletins.
Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive! This theme drew thousands of people
(lay faithful, clergy and religious) to Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families. The theme was
inspired by the early Church Father, St. Irenaeus, who wrote “the Glory of God is man fully alive.” The
glory of men and women is their capacity to love as God loves – and no better means exists to teach the
meaning of love than the family. His Holiness, Pope Francis also inspired the theme. He embodies the
message of mercy, joy and love at the heart of the Gospel. Saint John Paul II, hailed as the Pope of the
Family, created the World Meeting of Families in 1994 in Rome to explore the critical role the family
plays in society and to give families opportunities to talk about the challenges and blessings that all
families have.
We came to pray, reflect and work on ways we can uphold, foster and enrich the families to which
we belong, especially the Parish, which is called the family of families. Each keynote speaker and each
breakout session motivated us to think, and share the best practices that help us grow in faith, hope, and
love for God and one another.
We were challenged to be joy-filled families by knowing that God loves us and growing in that
love; by knowing that we have a purpose in life (We were made by God and for God!); by becoming
Christ like through greater spiritual formation of our faith and growing in discipleship; by becoming
servants after the likeness of Christ, helping those most in need; and finally, by fulfilling our mission—
our mission is love. So we are called to know, love, serve and share Christ with others.
It was a wonderfully powerful week filled with people from all over the world. We came together
to be renewed and revitalized in heart and soul in the mission—Love Is Our Mission-The Family Fully
Alive! Security got tighter by the weekend as the long anticipated visit of Pope Francis finally occurred
when his plane touched down on the tarmac at Philadelphia International Airport—Atlantic Aviation on
Saturday morning, September 26, 2015 at 9:35A.M. The Pope came to participate in the Eighth World
Meeting of Families. Saint John Paul II, hailed as the Pope of the Family, created the World Meeting of
Families in 1994 in Rome to explore the critical role the family plays in society and to give families
opportunities to talk about the challenges and blessings that all families have.
I was seated with other priests, deacons, bishops and lay faithful of the Archdiocese of
Philadelphia awaiting the arrival of the Holy Father. As soon as he entered the Cathedral-Basilica the
crowd cheered and music began. He walked down the center aisle and into the Chapel before making his
way to the sacristy to vest for the Mass. Cameras, iphones and ipads were recording his every step.
Excitement filled the Cathedral-Basilica and our hearts.
When all was ready, the music began and the Pope appeared full vested for the celebration of the
Eucharistic Liturgy. There were hundreds of bishops and us priests who were privileged to concelebrate
the Papal Mass that morning and listen to Pope Francis’s homily calling us to redouble our efforts to bring
the message of the Gospel to all, especially the poor and marginalized. Continued on page 6

SAINT FRANCIS, PRAY FOR US! On Sunday, October 4th, several parishioners gathered for the "Blessing of Animals" through the
intercession of Saint Francis. Below are some pictures that captures our four-legged friends during the prayer service.
Later that evening, I saw Pope Francis at the Festival of Families on the Benjamin Franklin
Parkway. Star studded performances and moving testimonies from families representing the five
continents of our mother earth. He listened attentively. He embraced each of them warmly as a friend and
brother affirming them and encouraging their lived witness as families of faith and love.
We gathered in droves on Sunday afternoon around our Holy Father as he celebrated the Closing
Mass of the Eighth World Meeting of Families. Pope Francis closed his homily by speaking of the
prophetic calling of married couples and their families as a kind of miracle today. He stated: “And how
beautiful it would be if everywhere, even beyond our borders, we could appreciate and encourage this
prophecy and this miracle! We renew our faith in the word of the Lord which invites faithful families to
this openness. It invites all those who want to share the prophecy of the covenant of man and woman,
which generates life and reveals God! May the Lord help us to be sharers in the prophecy of peace, of
tenderness and affection in the family. May his word help us to share in the prophetic sign of watching
over our children and our grandparents with tenderness, with patience and with love.”
He continued, “Anyone who wants to bring into this world a family which teaches children to be
excited by every gesture aimed at overcoming evil—a family which shows that the Spirit us alive and at
work—will encounter our gratitude and our appreciation. Whatever the family, people, religion or region
to which they belong! May God grant that all of us may be prophets of the joy of the Gospel, the Gospel
of the family and family love, as disciples of the Lord. May he grant is the grace to be worthy of that
purity of heart which is not scandalized by the Gospel! Amen.”
I pray that the blessings of the world Meeting of Families and the visit of Pope Francis will make
our parish a parish drawing us into the Sacred Heart of Jesus through the intercession of Our Lady and
Saint Joseph!
