This week's work for Year 6 Maths is about ratios: how to recognise and calculate them, as well as solving problems involvingthem. Finally, you will get the chance to practice your arithmetic skills. By the end of this week, you should be able to:

All the information and links to the resources you need are in this presentation. The videos from the White Rose website (Summer Term Week 10 - w/c 29th June) all still work, but the questions and answers are not on the website. DO NOT WORRY – I’ve put them all into the presentation for you☺

There are five lessons for this week, so you can do a different lesson each day. Do not worry if you don’t finish everything – all that matters is that you try your best. If some of the work is too tricky, we have also included some BBC Bitesize and Mathswatch activities to complete for each day instead, alongside x-table practice on TT Rockstars.

:Ratio, simply, is comparing something to (:) something else.

Remember, though, if you are comparing faces to hearts – the number of faces must go first:

We know how much the number of bags increases – but what is the multiple? 1 x __ = 3

If we multiply the one side of the colon by three, we must do the same to the other side.

7 x 3 = 21

So there are 21 sweets in three bags.

When we know the total and we know who has ‘how many parts’ we can use that to work out how much they get each.

If Mr Scarle has five parts and Mr Byrom, three, there are 8 parts in total.

If 8 parts = £56, we need to find out how much one part is (56 ÷ 8)

One part is £7! If Mr Scarle has five parts, you’d do 5x7 to work out he has £21 in total.

Scale factor (sometimes SF, for short):

Basically means how many times bigger or smaller you are making each side

Square A has been enlarged by a scale factor of 2 because 2 x 2 = 4

Square B has been enlarged by a scale factor of 0.5 because 4 x 0.5 = 2

This works for regular (same length sides) and irregular (different length sides) – you just have to multiply all sides by the scale factor enlargement.

Don’t fall into this trap!!!

What do we multiply 1 by to get 2?

We multiply by 2 so therefore each part of the

question requires this information (either to x or

÷)1 person -> x 2 -> = 2 people

5 sweets -> x 2 -> = 10 sweets

6 chocolates -> x2 = 12 chocolates

250ml drink = ÷ 2 <- 500ml drink

This one goes the other way! We know 2 people so what do we divide 2 by to

make 1?

There are 6 red to every 2 blue counters in a pile. There are 32 counters in total. How many blue are there? Again – knowing your times

tables is key here!

Step 1: Write it out

We know our starting ratio. So let’s work out how many counters that gives us 6 + 2 = 8.

Step 2: Solve it!

There are 32 counters in the pile. Each ‘part’ is 8 counters. How many times does 8 go into 32? 4

Is 15 a multiple of 6?

You will have to add another step – find a multiple of 6 that is also a multiple of 15 – for

example, 30.

Now consider:

To go from 6 -> 30, I multiply by 5 and then 30 -> 15, I divide by 2.
